James Andrews Considers Drew Brees' '05 Surgery 'No. 1 Most Memorable'

Nov 28, 2018 10:11 PM

Drew Brees suffered a dislocated right shoulder in 2005 and underwent surgery just as he was hitting free agency.

The Chargers had previously drafted Philip Rivers in the first round as Brees' eventual replacement.

The nature of Brees' shoulder injury was critical.

"Probably one in one million athletes could have gotten through that operation and been successful afterward,” said Dr. James Andrews.

It took three surgeons four hours to patch Brees' shoulder back together.

"That was the No. 1 most memorable.”

Michael Thomas Has Unprecedented Catch Rate

Nov 20, 2018 8:41 AM

Drew Brees is getting a lot of recognition as the potential NFL MVP this season.

Michael Thomas, however, is having a season unlike any wide receiver in history.

Thomas has caught 82 of the 91 passes he's been targeted on. His 90.1% completion rate is absolutely unprecedented for a 1,000-yard wide receiver.

Football Outsiders has target stats dating back to 1986, and the highest catch rate for any 1,000-yard wide receiver in the NFL since 1986 came when John Taylor (San Francisco 49ers) caught 80 percent of his passes in 1989, when he caught 60 passes for 1,077 yards.

Malcolm Jenkins Flipped Off Sean Payton After Late Touchdown

Nov 19, 2018 8:37 AM

The New Orleans Saints dominated the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, winning 48-7 at the Superdome.

There was some controversy late as cameras caught Malcolm Jenkins giving Sean Payton the finger after the Saints went for it on fourth-and-6 early in the fourth quarter with a 31-point lead. On the play, Alvin Kamara beat Jenkins for a 37-yard touchdown.

Jenkins played for Payton in New Orleans before coming to the Eagles a few years ago.

"I'm a competitor. I love Sean to death. I know what type of guy and coach he is. That was more so personal between me and him," Jenkins said.

"We talked after the game. It's all good. I know Sean. They're going to go for it. I was more so upset that it was on me."

Payton explained that he wasn't comfortable electing for a field goal try from that distance, and he didn't want to get burned by not keeping the foot on the gas with almost a full quarter left.

Sean Payton Smashes Fire Alarm Before Sunday's Win

Nov 12, 2018 3:13 PM

Sean Payton confirmed that he smashed a fire alarm inside the New Orleans Saints' locker room before Sunday's game at Cincinnati.

"Clearly we were having issues with the fire alarm at a time relative to 20 minutes, 30 minutes before we're supposed to be out. And it continued, it had gone on for 10 minutes. And I just needed the noise to stop," Payton said.

"And I gladly will take care of the repair cost. And I consider the Brown family (Bengals ownership) and that organization as close allies and people we have a lot of respect for, the same way with Marvin (Lewis). And it was just something that had gone on -- and in order for us as we got ready for the game, I thought that was important."

Payton said it was not a motivational tactic.

Michael Thomas Fined $30,000 By NFL For Cellphone Celebration

Nov 10, 2018 6:54 PM

Michael Thomas was fined $30,000 by the NFL for his cellphone celebration in last week's game.

Thomas brought back former Saints receiver Joe Horn's memorable 2003 celebration by retrieving a hidden cellphone from around the bottom of a goalpost.

When asked if someone helped plant the phone, Thomas said, "Um, I think someone ... I think Joe Horn left it."

"I paid a tribute to him, tried to get the crowd going a little bit more, set the tone, have fun out there, giving people a show," Thomas said. "You gotta have fun. All these guys just catching touchdowns and celebrating with each other, having fun, getting the crowd involved. I felt like I had an opportunity to make it happen, put the game away and make a call."
