Drew Brees suffered a dislocated right shoulder in 2005 and underwent surgery just as he was hitting free agency.

The Chargers had previously drafted Philip Rivers in the first round as Brees' eventual replacement.

The nature of Brees' shoulder injury was critical.

"Probably one in one million athletes could have gotten through that operation and been successful afterward,” said Dr. James Andrews.

It took three surgeons four hours to patch Brees' shoulder back together.

"That was the No. 1 most memorable.”
