Julian Edelman Out For 2017 With Torn ACL

Aug 27, 2017 10:42 AM

Julian Edelman will miss the entire 2017 season with a torn ACL.

"Julian is a great competitor, works hard, is tough, does all the things that you ask him to do. So I feel badly for him, of course," Bill Belichick said Saturday. " ... We hope that he will have a speedy and complete recovery, but the team will have to move on and compete this season without him. It's unfortunate, but that's the way it is."

Belichick said the team "has to move forward with the resources we have. Unfortunately, we've lost one. An important one. But as a team we still have to move forward and that's what we'll do. That process has already started."

Edelman suffered the injury while running an in-breaking route, beating linebacker Jarrad Davis and catching the ball at Detroit's 29-yard line.

Edelman signed a two-year contract extension through 2019.

Aug 26, 2017 10:02 AM

Julian Edelman was carted off Friday's preseason game with a knee injury that the New England Patriots fear is a torn ACL.

Edelman appeared to injure his right knee as he planted his foot into the turf to avoid Tavon Wilson and lunged forward.

Edelman walked off the field limping but unassisted.

The Patriots used Brandin Cooks, Chris Hogan and Danny Amendola with Edelman out of the game.

Dwayne Allen Admits Patriots' Offense 'Extremely Hard' To Learn

Aug 24, 2017 11:04 AM

Dwayne Allen admitted the New England Patriots' offense has been difficult to learn.

“It is extremely hard,” Allen said. “I’m not going to sugarcoat it.”

Allen joined the Patriots this offseason from the Indianapolis Colts.

“It is hard but also stimulating and very exciting,” Allen said. “It is one of those things that where you pray for something so long, and when it comes, you can’t cry because it’s harder than you thought it was going to be.

“You have to accept that and be grateful for it.”

Allen has the opportunity to work with Tom Brady and play the same position as Rob Gronkowski.

“Every quarterback and receiver have certain nuances to their game that are built over years and over time, and for me it has been catch-up almost,” Allen said. “Luckily I have Rob to observe and watch and see how he does things and how he interacts with Tom, and hopefully I can mimic some of that. Rob is one of the hardest-working men in this organization, and that is why he has been able to have the success that he has had and will continue to have.

“For me to be able to watch how he does things and watch how Tom and he communicate both verbally and nonverbally has been a huge help for my progression in the offense.”

Roger Goodell's Job As Commissioner Never In Danger

Aug 22, 2017 1:15 PM

There was speculation recently that Roger Goodell's job as commissioner could be in jeopardy due to how he's taken on both Jerry Jones and Robert Kraft during high profile suspensions.

But Goodell is on the cusp of a contract extension.

Ownership sources say Goodell's job was never in danger and he's trying to follow protocol on the Ezekiel Elliott situation.

Some owners feel that Jones has been "beyond out of line" a few times recently, never more than last October, when he yelled at NFL executive Lisa Friel at a hotel bar over the Elliott investigation.

Goodell is likely to remain in the job until he's at least 65 (2024).

Patriots Gave Donald Trump Super Bowl Ring

Aug 22, 2017 12:45 PM

The New England Patriots gave Donald Trump a commemorative Super Bowl ring after the team's visit to the White House in April.

Robert Kraft and Trump are longtime friends.

The NFL covers the cost of 150 rings for Super Bowl franchises, which are given to players, coaches, staff members and team executives; the ring coverage typically comes out to $5,000-$7,000 apiece. The league does not have a specific rule on who can receive a Super Bowl ring.

Trump received a customized ring that mirrored what Patriots players and staff received following their Super Bowl victory.

Patriots Expect Derek Rivers To Miss Entire Season With Knee Injury

Aug 18, 2017 10:49 AM

The New England Patriots fear Derek Rivers will miss the entire 2017 season with a knee injury.

Rivers was the Patriots' top selection in 2017, selected in the third round.

Rivers, who was selected 83rd overall, was projected to be part of a rotation at defensive end, which was arguably the Patriots' thinnest position entering training camp.

Trey Flowers leads the depth chart at defensive end.

Tom Brady: Don't Compare 2017 Patriots To Past Iterations

Aug 15, 2017 9:35 AM

Tom Brady doesn't think it's fair to compare the 2017 New England Patriots to any of the franchise's past teams.

"It is really unfair to set expectations. To me, in my mind, it's really a setup," Brady said. "You're talking about some magical years that we've had that may never be duplicated again."

Brady was asked if this year's team is as loaded as any he has played on.

"It is so far from those types of things. You're talking about some incredible teams that I've had an opportunity to be on and lucky to be on," Brady said. "This team is so far from where we need to be and we have so far to go.

"For this team, we need to be focused on so many other things than what people may think about us or say about us. There is so much improvement we need to make. I love the guys I'm playing with this year. It's a totally different version of a team we've had. We'll have our own strengths and weaknesses, but how the season plays out will be determined by what happens moving forward."

One plane will be used as the main plane for the season, while the other will be the backup.

Packers Nearly Traded Aaron Rodgers For Randy Moss In 2007

Aug 8, 2017 10:40 AM

In 2007, the Oakland Raiders were close to trading Randy Moss to the Green Bay Packers in a package that would have included Aaron Rodgers. Both Pro Football Talk and Michael Felger of the Boston Herald reported the Packers were ready to trade then-backup quarterback Rodgers for Moss.

The Raiders instead traded Moss to the New England Patriots for a fourth round pick that they used on John Bowie.

Moss agreed to restructure his deal with the Patriots and they went on to go 18-1.

Rodgers replaced Brett Favre as Packers' quarterback after the 2007 season.

The Raiders continued to search for a franchise quarterback until drafting Derek Carr in 2014.

Tom Brady Declines To Confirm Whether He Suffered Concussion In 2016

Aug 4, 2017 6:58 PM

Tom Brady declined to confirm whether or not he had a concussion in 2016.

Brady's wife, Gisele Bundchen, had said in May that Brady was concussed last season.

"I don't want to get into things that happened in my past, certainly medical history and so forth. I really don't think that's anybody's business," Brady said after the team's practice at Gillette Stadium. "What happened last year; I'm focused on this year and improving and working on things I need to get better at.

"So that's how I approach everything. I'm not sitting here worried about last year or five years ago. There are other people that do worry about that -- my wife, or my parents, or my sisters, people that love me and care about me. But I do the best I can do to be prepared to play -- mentally and physically -- and I give the game everything I can."

Brady turned 40 this week and was asked whether he's paid attention to recent studies on CTE.

"You're not blind to it as a player. That's why I believe in so much of being proactive with your health," Brady said. "I think when you're a player, and you see other players before you that did things a certain way and what's transpired with their health or well-being, and then you learn from it. I think that's the things I've really tried to incorporate in my own life.

"So I'm confident in what I do. I'm confident in the things I do and the ways I train, you know. But it's a contact sport, and I think we all understand that. There are a lot of great benefits that football brings you, [but] certainly you can be put in harm's way. So you just do the best you can do as a player, and obviously it's great that there is more awareness for those types of things. That's been a very important topic, certainly. But you just try to be proactive and take care of your body the best way you can."
