Tom Brady Voted NFL's Best Player

Jun 26, 2017 10:55 PM

Tom Brady has been voted the NFL's top player in the NFL Network's annual top-100 poll voted upon by fellow players.

It marks the second time that Brady has ranked No. 1 and makes him the only player to be voted first multiple times since the poll debuted in 2011. He was No. 2 last season, behind Cam Newton.

Brady was also voted No. 1 in 2011. He was fourth in both 2012 and 2013 and third in both 2014 and 2015.

Devonta Freeman Was 'Supposed' To Be Super Bowl MVP

Jun 23, 2017 11:00 AM

Devonta Freeman believes he lost the chance to be named MVP of this past Super Bowl.

"I hate to go there, but I was supposed to be the MVP this year of the Super Bowl, but it's all good, we got another shot," the Atlanta Falcons running back said.

The Falcons held a 28-3 lead over the New England Patriots late in February's big game before watching Tom Brady led a historic comeback.

"I don't want to make this no competition thing with me and my quarterback [Matt Ryan, the NFL MVP]. I'm just talking about from based off that game. Let's [say] it like this: If I would have kept getting the ball, if I would have stayed in the game, I don't know why I got out of the game actually.

"But if I would have stayed in the game, I would have got MVP. I'm looking at my stats and I see my numbers didn't lie. Look at my numbers," he said.

Freeman had 75 yards rushing on 11 carries, including a 5-yard touchdown run. He also had two catches for 46 yards. But he had just five rushes for 4 yards in the second half and overtime.

Brady was named the MVP of the game.

Patriots Sign David Harris

Jun 21, 2017 11:21 AM

The New England Patriots have agreed to a two-year deal with David Harris.

The New York Jets released Harris on June 6 after being unable to agree on a pay cut with the linebacker, who played 10 seasons for the team.

The Patriots needed a linebacker to play the most snaps alongside Dont'a Hightower.

Harris was surprised by the Jets' decision to release him.

A second-round pick in 2007, Harris ranks No. 2 in tackles in Jets team history.

Former NFL Player Ryan O'Callaghan Comes Out As Gay

Jun 20, 2017 1:31 PM

Ryan O'Callaghan, former offensive tackle for the New England Patriots and Kansas City Chiefs, has come out as gay.

O'Callaghan came out to himself in junior high school but he decided that he would never let anyone know.

“If you’re a gay kid and you hear someone you love say ‘fag,’ it makes you think that in their eyes you’re just a fag too,” O’Callaghan told Outsports on a recent visit to Los Angeles for his first-ever Pride celebration. “That got to me a lot.”

O'Callaghan had planned to commit suicide when his NFL career ended until a small group of people in the Chiefs' organization helped him.

No one is going to assume the big football player is gay,” he said. “It’s why a football team is such a good place to hide."

O’Callaghan can’t recall a single time during his six NFL seasons that he heard someone use a gay slur.

When injuries ended O'Callaghan's career, he began abusing painkillers.

“I started spending all my money to put myself in a position where it would be impossible, or at least extremely difficult, to back out of killing myself,” said O'Callaghan.

While methodically sabotaging his own life, O’Callaghan was going to physical therapy at the Chiefs facility. David Price, Kansas City's head trainer, began noticing O'Callaghan was acting erratically.

Price encouraged O’Callaghan to spend some time with Susan Wilson, a woman who worked with the Chiefs and the NFL counseling players on drug abuse.

“David saw the pain pills as the problem, and they were,” O’Callaghan explained. “But the real problem was why I was abusing them. And it wasn’t just the injuries.”

Wilson became the first to whom he confided he was gay. As O'Callaghan ended his drug abuse, he came out to Scott Pioli.

“People like me are supposed to react a certain way, I guess,” Pioli told Outsports. “I wasn’t minimizing what he was telling me, but I’m waiting for the other shoe to drop. He built this up and built this up to the point where he said he was nearly suicidal. What Ryan didn’t know is how many gay people I’ve had in my life.”

Tom Brady Dreams Of Playing NFL Game In China

Jun 20, 2017 8:39 AM

Tom Brady, on a promotional tour in China, said that he'd love to play an NFL game in the country.

The New England Patriots were scheduled to face the Seattle Seahawks in a 2007 preseason game in China, but the game was ultimately canceled.

"My dream is to play a game here in China someday," Brady said. "We had an opportunity, I think, 10 years ago, and my team was going to play here, and unfortunately it didn't work out. But one day I hope that there are many games here, and over the course of a year, because it's such a great sport and because I love it so much, to bring that here and to bring the discipline and incredible strategy involved."

The NFL is reportedly looking to play a regular-season game in China next year.

Jun 12, 2017 8:04 AM

The New England Patriots' Super Bowl LI rings each contain 283 diamonds, a subtle nod to the team's comeback from a 28-3 deficit against the Atlanta Falcons in February.

The rings were presented during a private ceremony Friday night at owner Robert Kraft's home.

A news release describing the ring noted that it contains a "total of more than 280 diamonds." Patriots spokesman Stacey James said the rings each have 283 diamonds "to tell the story of the game."

New England trailed the Falcons 28-3 in the third quarter of the Super Bowl but went on to score the game's final 31 points to win 34-28 in overtime.

The New England Patriots and Julian Edelman have agreed upon a two-year, $11 million extension.

With Edelman now signed through 2019, the Patriots have four of their five top receivers signed for multiple seasons: Edelman, Brandin Cooks (2018), Chris Hogan (2018) and Malcolm Mitchell (2019).

Jimmy Garoppolo Open To Extension With Patriots

Jun 7, 2017 5:08 PM

Jimmy Garoppolo is interested in a contract extension with the New England Patriots as he enters the final season of his contract.

Garoppolo also wants to play now that he's 25.

"I'd entertain any possibility," he said, when asked if he would be open to a contract extension with the club. "I'm not really thinking about it too much right now. There's so much going on with OTAs and training camp right around the corner, that's where my focus is. We'll cross that bridge when we get there, I guess."

Tom Brady is signed through the 2019 season, and Garoppolo has maintained patience as his backup.

"Obviously, I want to play. That's the competitor in me. I think everyone out here wants to play," he said. "We come out here and compete every day for that opportunity and if you go out and earn it, it's yours. ... Nothing is going to be given to you, especially here."
