Dallas Gets 2011 Super Bowl

Sep 3, 2014 6:33 AM

The 2011 Super Bowl will be played at the Dallas Cowboys' new stadium in Arlington, Texas. Indianapolis and Arizona also bid for the game. NFL owners voted for the North Texas group, which had Hall of Famer Roger Staubach lobbying on its behalf. The Cowboys' $1 billion stadium seats more than 100,000 and will open in 2009. It has about 27,000 more seats than the other stadiums involved. The Indianapolis bid featured the Colts' domed stadium opening in 2008 and was backed by a Top 10 list by David Letterman. Arizona hosts the 2008 Super Bowl on Feb. 3 and hosted the 1996 Super Bowl in Tempe.

Will It Be Indy, Texas, Or Arizona For 2011 Super Bowl?

Jul 25, 2014 8:17 AM

Tony Dungy has given lots of big talks, including one in February that turned out pretty well for his Colts. Now he hoped to persuade NFL owners to let Indianapolis host the 2011 Super Bowl. "It's a lot different," Dungy said. "This is not like speaking to your team the night before the game. This will be fun. It'll be exciting." Indianapolis pulled out the star power to help present the city's bid to host the 2011 Super Bowl, with Dungy backed by Tony George, the chief executive officer of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and an executive vice president of the NCAA. The big names were needed with North Texas tapping Roger Staubach, the Hall of Fame quarterback with two Super Bowl rings with the Cowboys, to talk to owners. Glendale, Ariz., was the other finalist.

Former NFL Lineman John Gonzaga Dies At 74

Oct 19, 2014 7:50 PM

Former Lions lineman John Gonzaga, who was working in a steel mill when he was signed by the 49ers in 1956, has died. He was 74. Gonzaga died Thursday at his home in the Detroit suburb of West Bloomfield Township, according to the Lions and McCabe Funeral Home in Farmington Hills. A cause of death wasn't released, the funeral home said. The team said Gonzaga's death followed a lengthy illness. Born in Martinez, Calif., Gonzaga played five seasons for Detroit (1961-65) and worked for Ford Motor Co. during the offseason. He also played for the 49ers (1956-59), the Cowboys (1960) and the Broncos (1966).

TO: I Got Nothin' Out of Tuna

Terrell Owens was asked what he got out of his only season with Bill Parcells. "Nothing, really," T.O. said Monday, the last day of the Dallas Cowboys' first minicamp since Parcells retired. Owens obviously isn't going to miss Parcells, and has already noticed how different things are under new coach Wade Phillips. "Everybody knows he's a a laid-back coach, obviously a little different than Bill. ... I don't think you have to be a disciplinarian to get your point across," Owens said. "I think having a new head coach is good for everybody.

T.O. Shows Up At Camp

Sep 22, 2014 6:59 PM

Terrell Owens again caught his Dallas Cowboys teammates and coaches off guard. But this time, instead of being involved in off-the-field controversy, Owens surprised by showing up and participating in the team's first minicamp. The wide receiver has been recovering from two surgeries on his right ring finger this off-season. New Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips said earlier in the week that Owens would not participate in the minicamp. "I'm surprised but I can understand why he wanted to come out here," Dallas owner and GM Jerry Jones said. "He got caught up in the enthusiasm of being with the team, the excitement we've got about our team. I'm sure he just wanted to go ahead and catch some passes." Up against Dallas' first-team defense, Owens beat cornerback Terence Newman and gathered in a deep pass by Tony Romo, laughing as he ran through the end zone. But Owens wouldn't speak with reporters. During the team's media availability with players, Owens walked out and said only, "I have nothing to talk about."

No Passes For Owens At Minicamp

May 18, 2014 4:20 PM

When Terrell Owens had surgery to repair a torn tendon in his right ring finger in January, the veteran receiver said his goal was to catch passes by the end of May. That will have to wait. Owens will be in attendance at this weekend's minicamp but will not do any on-field work.
