Steve Smith Sr. Not Worried About Injury Risk Returning Punts

Sep 19, 2015 11:28 AM

Steve Smith Sr. will handle punt return duties and he's not worried about the added injury risk.

"Football has a degree of injuries and I don't think really on any play there's a higher percentage or a lesser percentage," Smith said, via the Baltimore Sun. "If you're going to get hurt, you're going to get hurt in this game. That's just a fact."

Smith is in his final season in the NFL.

"Punt returns are actually one of those plays where you actually can control a lot more than people anticipate," Smith said. "The player understands when he's out there on the punt return, I can fair catch the ball, I cannot catch it or I can return it. I have options. As a receiver, I have no options. I either catch it or I don't. I get hit or I don't. I can't fair catch a pass and not get hit. That's kind of the distinct difference with the ability to control things on punt returns that you don't have the luxury to do at certain positions."

Terrell Suggs Tears Achilles Tendon, Out For Season

Sep 13, 2015 11:05 PM

Terrell Suggs will miss the remainder of the 2015 season with a torn Achilles tendon.

Many players in the locker room were visibly shaken by the news, and wide receiver Steve Smith Sr. and linebacker Courtney Upshaw choked up when talking about losing Suggs.

"That's our leader. The motto here is next man up, and you're going to hear everybody saying that," Upshaw said. "But you never want to lose a guy like him. He's been a cornerstone for this defense for a long time."

Suggs turn 33 next month and may elect to retire.
