Kyler Murray Won't Come Off PUP When Eligible

Sep 30, 2023 5:28 PM

Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray is not expected to come off the physically unable to perform list when he becomes eligible Monday and still is considered weeks away from playing, league sources told ESPN.

Murray has not practiced since tearing an ACL in December against the New England Patriots. The former No. 1 overall draft selection wants and plans to return this season, but he slowly is ramping up his comeback in an attempt to rejoin the Cardinals, sources told ESPN.

"It just doesn't feel like [Murray's return] is imminent," a Cardinals source said.

Von Miler Expected To Resume Practicing

Sep 30, 2023 5:26 PM

Buffalo Bills star pass-rusher Von Miller, who has not played since tearing his right ACL on Thanksgiving Day last season, is expected to resume practicing this week, sources told ESPN.

Miller is on the physically unable to perform list and will miss his fourth game to start the season Sunday when the Miami Dolphins visit the Bills, who will have a five-week period to allow the eight-time Pro Bowler to resume practicing starting Monday. Once a player who starts the season on the PUP list returns to practice, a team has three weeks to decide whether to activate him to the 53-man roster.

Austin Ekeler Practices, But Hasn't Pushed To '100 Percent' Yet

Sep 28, 2023 8:43 AM

Austin Ekeler returned to practice with the Los Angeles Chargers on Wednesday for the first time since he suffered a high ankle sprain in Week 1.

Ekeler went through individual drills where he sprinted with the football in his hand and bounced up and down on the injured ankle throughout the portion of practice open to the media.

After practice, Ekeler told reporters that playing this Sunday is a "possibility."

"I can run full speed straight ahead right now," Ekeler said. "But if I go turn -- that's where I have been trying to build back towards."

The challenge for the running back is that making cuts or turns is still painful. Ekeler said he had never had a high ankle sprain before.

"I'm not at a point where I've gone out there and tried to push it 100% yet," he said, "That's not how the process works. You continue to build yourself back. It's kind of like climbing the stairs. You're not gonna just jump straight to the top stair and tell me, 'Oh yeah, I can make it there.' You kind of go one-by-one, 'OK, now we're progressing towards 100%.' So I haven't been there yet."

Rams Hoping To Get Cooper Kupp Back In Week 5

Sep 28, 2023 8:36 AM

Sean McVay says it is "the hope" that Cooper Kupp will be able to come off of injured reserve when the Los Angeles Rams face the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 5.

Kupp has missed the Rams' first three games of the season with a hamstring injury and is eligible to return from IR after Week 4.

The wide receiver first injured his hamstring Aug. 1 during a training camp practice and experienced a setback prior to the start of the season.

McVay said he didn't "want to pigeonhole" himself by saying that Kupp would be able to play in Week 5, but that the wide receiver is progressing and "ramping up his workload."

"He's doing a great job with [VP of sports medicine Reggie Scott] and his group, but when you're talking about returning to performance and returning to play, those are different things," McVay said. "And we want him to be able to return to performance at the level that he's capable of.

"And so we're continuing to take it a day at a time. I know he's doing everything in his power to be able to get himself ready to go and get out there with his teammates, and hopefully next week will represent that."

Joe Burrow Using Aaron Rodgers As 'Resource' On Calf Injury

Sep 28, 2023 8:33 AM

Joe Burrow has been using Aaron Rodgers as a "resource" in how he handles his lingering calf injury.

Rodgers revealed on "The Pat McAfee Show" this week that he reached out to Burrow after the Bengals' quarterback played through a right calf injury in the team's 19-16 win over the Los Angeles Rams on Monday night.

Burrow said the two connected last week as he wanted to use Rodgers as a resource given his own injury history.

"He's dealt with calf issues his whole career and wanted to use him as a resource and get his thoughts, what he might have done," said Burrow, who added that he considered what Rodgers said. "He's been through it, done that. And he was great about it."

In his interview with McAfee, Rodgers praised Burrow's toughness and described the difficulty of playing with the calf injury.

"For him to tough it out, I don't think that people realize how much pain and limited mobility he was in," Rodgers said. "But for him to gut it out last night and to make enough plays to win, like I texted him, that's what great competitors do. They show up and play through the pain and don't make it a big deal."

Packers Optimistic Aaron Jones, Christian Watson Will Play

Sep 27, 2023 8:44 AM

The Green Bay Packers are optimistic Aaron Jones and Christian Watson will return for Thursday night's game against the Detroit Lions.

Both players are dealing with hamstring injuries.

Watson, who missed the first three games of the season, said he expects to make his season debut on Thursday at Lambeau Field.

"That's the plan," Watson said.

Jones, who pulled a hamstring in Week 1, wasn't around to speak for himself but Jordan Love and Romeo Doubs did.

"It'll be huge," Doubs said of their return. "I know Christian is a guy that can go out there and make plays. We can all make plays but I know Christian can go out there and make them because he's really experienced in this offense, too."

"We'll have 3-3 back," Doubs added referring to Jones' uniform number 33. "So, Aaron's Aaron. He's been making plays, so it'll be exciting."

Joe Burrow: Risk Of 0-3 Outweighed Risk Of Reinjury

Sep 26, 2023 8:32 AM

Joe Burrow said the risk of the Cincinnati Bengals going 0-3 on Monday night outweighed the possibility of the quarterback further injuring his strained right calf.

Eight days after he aggravated the calf, Burrow played every offensive snap as the Bengals defeated the Los Angeles Rams 19-16.

"There is risk to go out there and potentially reinjure it," Burrow said. "But there's also the risk to not go out there and be 0-3. So I wanted to be out there for my guys, and I was confident that I would be able to do what I needed to get the win."

Burrow was 26-of-49 passing for 259 yards with no touchdowns and one interception. Afterward, he acknowledged that he and the offense need to be better.

The quarterback said he went through a workout Monday morning and felt good enough to play. He said the criteria was simply not having any setbacks. Once he practiced Friday and Saturday, he said he felt confident in his ability to compete and voiced that sentiment to team personnel.

Ja'Marr Chase was vocal throughout the week about Burrow not playing if he wasn't completely healthy, and Chase repeated that opinion before the game.

"I was like, 'You got nuts, boy. I didn't want you to play,'" Chase said. "That just shows that Joe's hardheaded. But he's a football player, man. You can't knock him from being tough like that. They don't make too many quarterbacks tough like that."

Saints' Derek Carr Is Week-To-Week With Sprained AC Joint

Sep 26, 2023 8:28 AM

Derek Carr sprained his right AC joint and is considered week-to-week, according to the New Orleans Saints.

Dennis Allen did not rule Carr out for Sunday's game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but the team will be cautious with the quarterback and it would be a surprise if he played in Week 4, according to sources.

Jameis Winston is the No. 2 quarterback behind Carr.

"We're not making any decisions today; we're not ruling anything out," Allen said Monday. "We'll see where he's at as the week goes on."

Carr was hurt in the third quarter of the Saints' 18-17 loss to the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field on Sunday.

Mike Williams Out For 2023 With Torn ACL

Sep 25, 2023 1:56 PM

Mike Williams has been ruled out for the rest of the 2023 season with a torn ACL.

Williams has been one of the Chargers' top targets since he entered the league in 2017. In March 2022, the Chargers rewarded Williams with a three-year, $60 million contract.

Williams caught a pass in the third quarter and went to make a juke move to get by Vikings safety Harrison Smith. But Williams planted his left leg, fell, and was tackled from behind.
