Patrick Mahomes To Start AFC Championship Game

Jan 27, 2023 3:30 PM

Patrick Mahomes will start the AFC Championship Game for the Kansas City Chiefs despite his high ankle sprain, Andy Reid confirmed on Friday.

Mahomes suffered the injury in the first half of last week's game.

Mahomes practice all three days this week.

Reid said the Chiefs' game plan is expansive enough that they can call plays to avoid any limitations Mahomes may have.

"He's moving around [well],'' Reid said. "He can go out and play.''

Tua Tagovailoa Remains In Concussion Protocol, Won't Play In Pro Bowl

Jan 27, 2023 3:22 PM

Tua Tagovailoa remains in the concussion protocol and won't participate in the Pro Bowl Games next week.

Tagovailoa had been named a first alternate Pro Bowler and was set to replace either Joe Burrow or Patrick Mahomes, with both quarterbacks playing in Sunday's AFC Championship Game and one bound for Super Bowl LVII.

Tagovailoa's time in the protocol has been deliberate as he meets with multiple doctors and specialists. There have not been any setbacks as the Dolphins prioritize his long-term health.

Patrick Mahomes Says He's 'Ready To Go' For AFC Title Game

Jan 26, 2023 8:27 AM

Patrick Mahomes is leaving no doubt that he'll play against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday.

"AFC championship week," Mahomes said. "Ready to go."

Mahomes suffered a high ankle sprain in the first quarter of the Kansas City Chiefs' 27-20 playoff victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Saturday. He returned to the game in the second half.

Mahomes was listed as a full participant at Wednesday's practice. Mahomes said the ankle has progressed since the game against the Jaguars.

"It's doing good," he said. "I've done a few days of treatment, a few days of rehab. Excited to get on the practice field and kind of test it out and see where I'm at. But it's feeling good so far.

"I felt better than I thought I was going to be after the game. Moving on it during the game definitely hurt. But after the game, I was able to rest it and kind of ice it up and do different stuff like that. I felt in a little bit better position, and obviously the next morning felt a little bit better, and then I've continued to get better throughout the week, so we'll see how I feel today at practice."

Cautious Chiefs Preparing As Though Patrick Mahomes Will Play

The Kansas City Chiefs are preparing as though Patrick Mahomes will play against the Cincinnati Bengals in the AFC Championship Game.

Andy Reid said the Chiefs aren't certain whether they will be able to go with Mahomes or have to use veteran Chad Henne at quarterback on Sunday.

"He's worked hard in the treatment and is doing OK," Reid said of Mahomes, who suffered a high ankle sprain in Saturday's win over the Jacksonville Jaguars.

"He mentioned it to you that he's going to play. That's his mindset, and then we'll just take it day by day and see how he does."

Tony Pollard Has Broken Leg, Needs Surgery

Jan 23, 2023 9:57 AM

Dallas Cowboys running back Tony Pollard suffered a fractured left fibula Sunday that will require surgery, according to sources.

Pollard suffered the injury with 1:24 left in the first half of the Cowboys' 19-12 divisional round loss to the San Francisco 49ers when he was rolled up after an 8-yard catch.

Pollard needed help to the sideline and was wearing an Aircast on his left leg as he was carted to the X-ray room inside Levi's Stadium.

He is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent in March and had the best season of his career. In 16 regular-season games, Pollard had 1,007 yards on 193 carries. He scored 12 touchdowns this season, surpassing the total he had in his first three seasons. He was named to the Pro Bowl for the first time in his career.

Lamar Jackson Out For Wildcard Game With 'Unstable' Knee

Jan 12, 2023 11:22 PM

Lamar Jackson won't play in Sunday's playoff game at the Cincinnati Bengals as his left knee "remains unstable."

Jackson indicated on Twitter that he has "suffered a PCL Grade 2 sprain, on the borderline of a strain 3."

"There is still inflammation surrounding my knee and my knee remains unstable," Jackson wrote. "I wish I could be out there with my guys more than anything, but I can't give a 100% of myself to my guys and fans. I'm still hopeful we have a chance."

The Baltimore Ravens will start either Tyler Huntley or Anthony Brown in the game.

The Ravens initially described his return as "week to week," but he hasn't suited up for the past 39 days and, as of last week, was still walking with a limp.
