Arians 'Probably Would Still Be Coaching' If Brady Hadn't Unretired

Jun 13, 2022 9:13 AM

Bruce Arians admits that he likely wouldn't have stepped aside as head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers if Tom Brady hadn't come out of retirement.

"I was going the other way. I was thinking he wasn't going to play," Arians said.

"I was thinking about who are we going to get? Who wants to trade? There wasn't anybody to draft. That was obvious. Me, to the public, I was fine with the two we had: Blaine (Gabbert) and Kyle (Trask). Because I've seen Blaine win with a good team behind him. Had Tom not come back, I probably would still be coaching. I couldn't give Todd that situation."

Brady retired shortly after Tampa's playoff loss to the Los Angeles Rams. Six weeks later, he announced he'd return and two weeks after that Arians announced he'd step aside and Todd Bowles would become the head coach.

Tom Brady Doesn't Refute Report He Talked With Dolphins

Jun 10, 2022 8:54 AM

Tom Brady, who is in the final year of his contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, didn't deny he had talks with the Miami Dolphins as he discussed his playing future this offseason.

"I've had a lot of conversations with a lot of people, as I've had for the past three or four years in my career, about different opportunities when I'm done playing football," Brady said. "I kind of made a decision of what I'd like to do. I'll get to be in the game of football.

"The most important thing is where I'm at now and what I hope to do for this team. That's been my commitment, to this team and this organization."

Tom Brady Felt Pressure To Return Due To Free Agency

Jun 3, 2022 8:45 AM

In his first public comments since unretiring earlier this year after just 40 days, Tom Brady said he felt pressure to end his retirement because of free agency, and that his key reasons for his indecision stemmed from commitments to his family.

"At this stage, it's like 55% yes and 45% no," Brady said in a roundtable that aired on TNT following Capital One's The Match.

"It's not 100-0. That's just the reality. It's not that I'm not 100% committed, it's just as soon as I make the commitment to do it, it's like, 'Ugh. All right, here we go.' It's like running a marathon. You can't decide two weeks before the marathon, 'Hey, I'm going to start running.' We got right to free agency and I felt some pressure to do it and talked to the team and organization, and it all worked out."

Brady was asked whether he had been ready to retire.

"Partly, you know, yes," said Brady, who will turn 45 in August. "And I think when you're their [Mahomes' and Allen's] age, if you were to ask me, 'Are you going to play football next year?' I would say there's a 100% chance I'm playing. And I think as I've gotten older, that's changed because I have other responsibilities."
