The New York Giants placed a rare unrestricted free agent tender on Markus Golden.

The "May 5" tender still allows Golden to negotiate a deal with other teams and the Giants would not receive any compensation if he signed elsewhere, but he would count toward the 2021 compensatory pick formula.

If Golden remains unsigned past July 22nd, he could only play for the Giants at $5.225 million.

Golden finished with 10 sacks last season and was perhaps the Giants' best defensive player in 2019.

New York Giants general manager Dave Gettleman raised some eyebrows for wearing a mask while sitting alone in his draft room on Thursday night.

The ESPN broadcast showed Gettleman putting on a mask just moments after the Giants used the fourth overall pick on Georgia offensive tackle Andrew Thomas.

"Well, I have a young IT fellow over here with me," he said. "And we're social distancing. Part of it is the mask. I'm fine."

Gettleman is a cancer survivor, having been treated for lymphoma two years ago.

The Detroit Lions plan on trading down from No. 3 to either No. 4 or No. 5.

The Lions have a degree of confidence they will agree to a trade with either the New York Giants at No. 4 or the Miami Dolphins at No. 5.

The Giants are believed to be targeting an offensive tackle at No. 4, as are the Dolphins at No. 5. 

The targets are Georgia tackle Andrew Thomas, Alabama tackle Jedrick Wills Jr. or Iowa tackle Tristan Wirfs.

The Dolphins could trade up to No. 3, but could target a quarterback such as Justin Herbert or Tua Tagovailoa. 

Leonard Williams has signed his franchise tag tender with the New York Giants.

It remains to be seen whether he'll be paid like a defensive end or a defensive tackle.

Williams wants to be listed as a defensive end, which would mean a more lucrative contract. The franchise tag for a defensive tackle is $16.1 million this year. The franchise tag for a defensive end is $17.8 million.

The New York Giants are willing to trade down from No. 4 in the 2020 NFL Draft.

"It's something I will very seriously entertain," David Gettleman said Friday on a conference call with reporters.

Gettleman has never traded back in his career as an NFL general manager.

"We're sitting there with the fourth pick of the draft. It's going to happen pretty soon," Gettleman said. "I'm going to make calls and anybody that wants to move up, I'm going to say, 'Listen, we don't have much time. We can't fool around. I'd like to get the parameters of a deal in place before we get on the clock.' That would be the best thing."
