Trench Counter: Pats, Jets, Saints Strong Week 5 Plays ATS

Aug 29, 2014 7:49 AM

The Trench Counter attempts to determine which teams win the battle at the line of scrimmage and isolate flukish plays. With four weeks of data in the books, the Trench Counter can identify teams that are overrated or underrated relative to their record and the perception of oddsmakers in Vegas.

Here are three games that are vulnerable for bettors based on the Trench Counter.

New England Patriots (4.45) at Cincinnati Bengals (-1.75), Bengals -1.5: Despite being 2-2, Cincinnati has played in four very close games, but have a negative Trench Counter in three of four.  They are slight favorites against the Patriots, who are undefeated in all four regular season and Trench Counter match-ups. Even though Cincinnati is home, they have not performed well enough within the trenches to be favored. New England, still without Danny Amendola and Rob Gronkowski, will find a way to steal this one.

New York Jets (-1.48) at Atlanta Falcons (-1.53), Falcons -9.5: The Trench Counter ranks these two teams at 19 and 20, respectively. Without injured running back Steven Jackson and a limited Roddy White, the Falcons are struggling to meet this season's expectations, both in the Trench Counter and win column. At 1-3, Atlanta needs a victory and thankfully rookie quarterback Geno Smith and the Jets are coming to town. Expect Atlanta to win this one, but don't be surprised if the heavy underdog Jets cover the week's second highest spread.

New Orleans Saints (8.60) at Chicago Bears (2.50), Bears -1.5: The Saints are clicking on all cylinders since Sean Payton returned, and have dominated the Trench Counter ratings over the past three weeks. Chicago, on the other hand, are in the middle of the pack. While the Bears are home, expect Rob Ryan's defense to bring out Jay Cutler's mistakes, while Drew Brees leads the offense to an 'upset.'
