Saints Acquire LB Shanle

Aug 1, 2014 4:29 AM

Hoping to bolster their shaky linebacker corps, the New Orleans Saints acquired fourth-year veteran Scott Shanle from the Dallas Cowboys in exchange for a fourth-round choice in the 2007 draft. Shanle, 26, appeared in 15 games for the Cowboys in 2005, starting seven contests at inside linebacker in the Dallas 3-4 alignment. He registered 50 tackles, 1? sacks and two passes defensed. But he was rendered extraneous when the Cowboys added veteran Akin Ayodele in free agency this spring and chose Bobby Carpenter in the first round of the draft.

Bills Release LB Courtney Watson

May 18, 2014 4:34 AM

Linebacker Courtney Watson's chance for a fresh start ended Tuesday when he was among four players cut by the Buffalo Bills. A two-year NFL veteran and former second-round draft pick, Watson failed to make a significant impression in training camp after the Bills acquired him in June as part of a trade that sent tight end Tim Euhus to New Orleans. Watson is considered to be a huge bust and has never lived up to NFL expectations.

NFL Fines Bush For Unauthorized Cleats

Aug 1, 2014 4:19 AM

New Orleans rookie running back Reggie Bush drew more than just rave reviews for his fancy footwork Saturday in the Saints' preseason victory over the Titans. He also drew a fine. The NFL objected to the No. 2 overall pick in the 2006 NFL draft wearing his new Adidas cleats. The league only allows players to wear Nike or Reebok shoes during games because of a marketing partnership.

Saints' QB Hit By Golf Cart Ridden By Titans' Mascot

Oct 20, 2014 4:34 PM

New Orleans quarterback Adrian McPherson went to the locker room early in the third quarter after a golf cart ridden by the Titans' mascot hit him at the end of halftime. A Saints spokesman wasn't immediately available for an update on the quarterback, who's heading into his second season. The mascot was riding on a golf cart and throwing items into the stands during halftime, and was heading off the field when the Saints were returning from their locker room for the third quarter. The cart hit McPherson, who stayed on the field for a few minutes being checked out by a trainer on the sideline. He then walked off the field.

Bush Outshines Young On Saturday Night

Nov 8, 2014 2:49 AM

Reggie Bush looks every bit as good in the NFL as he did at USC. Vince Young is a fan favorite, but needs to learn when to throw the ball away. Todd Bouman tossed a 22-yard touchdown pass to Lance Moore with 3:30 left, and the Saints rallied for a 19-16 victory over the Titans in coach Sean Payton's coaching debut. Bush needed all of two carries to show why New Orleans took him with the second pick overall. Stopped behind the line while going to his left, the Heisman Trophy winner bounced out, turned right and zoomed past two Titans up the sideline for 44 yards to the Tennessee 24. He finished with 59 yards on six carries.

Bush And White Will Face Off In Preseason

Nov 8, 2014 2:49 AM

New Orleans rookie running back Reggie Bush will see some familiar faces when the Saints play their preseason opener at Tennessee tonight. His backfield mate at USC, LenDale White, is a third-round pick of the Titans and is expected to play in the second half. Tennessee?s offensive coordinator Norm Chow was Bush?s coordinator in college. On a slightly more negative note, Bush will face a rematch with Titans? No. 1 pick Vince Young, who quarterbacked Texas to victory over the Trojans in the BCS Championship in the Rose Bowl in January. ?LenDale is still like a brother to me,? Bush said. ?We battled together, we worked together. It?ll just be a little weird seeing him over there in a different jersey. But other than that, he?s still one of my good friends. ?This is a time for us to learn and get better and prepare ourselves for the regular season when it actually counts, so this will be a learning process for all the rookies. (The media) will probably try to make it a Vince Young-Reggie Bush thing, but it?s a Tennessee Titans-New Orleans Saints game.?

Saints' Anthony Simmons Retires

Nov 22, 2014 10:27 PM

Veteran Anthony Simmons, who failed to report to the New Orleans Saints training camp, has retired. A spokesman for the agency which represents the seven-year veteran said that Simmons had family issues that required his attention and that the wrist injury which kept him out of the league the entire 2005 season had flared up again. Those two elements made Simmons, who was projected to go to camp as a starter in the revamped New Orleans defense, reconsider his comeback attempt.

Chiefs Acquire RB Bennett From Saints

Sep 27, 2014 11:09 PM

With the future of Priest Holmes still undetermined, the Chiefs on Tuesday night acquired running back Michael Bennett from the Saints for what is believed to be a future draft choice, ESPN.com has learned. Paperwork must still be filed with the NFL office and the deal is contingent on Bennett passing a Chiefs-administered physical exam. That should not be a problem since Bennett was already in camp with the Saints and practicing.
