The Minnesota Vikings have agreed to a reworked contract with Harrison Smith, according to a source.

Smith was due to receive $15.3 million in cash for 2023 and count $19.1 million against the salary cap, which made him a candidate to be cut.

The Vikings gave the safety permission to seek other opportunities around the league as he considered a reduced contract offer. Ultimately, Smith decided to take the Vikings' deal and return for a 12th season with the team. 

Per the source, Smith accepted a pay cut of just under 50% to about $8 million for the 2023 season, before incentives.

The Minnesota Vikings have agreed to a two-year contract extension with Alexander Mattison, according to a report.

Mattison's new deal is worth $7 million with $6.35 million in guarantees and the possibility to earn a total of $8 million.

The running back joined the Vikings in 2019 as a third-round pick out of Boise State.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are signing Patrick Peterson to a one-year deal, according to a report.

Peterson spent the last two seasons with the Minnesota Vikings.

A first-round pick of the Arizona Cardinals in 2011, Peterson spent 10 years with Arizona and two with Minnesota.

Bud Grant, the Hall of Fame coach who led the Minnesota Vikings to four Super Bowl appearances, has died at the age of 95, the Vikings announced Saturday.

In Grant's 28 seasons as a head coach in Canada and with the Vikings, his teams reached the playoffs 20 times, played in 10 championship games and won four titles. However, none of those titles came in the NFL, as he became the first coach to lose four Super Bowls.

The Minnesota Vikings will release Adam Thielen, according to a report.

A Minnesota native, Thielen signed with the team in 2013 after serving as a tryout player at rookie minicamp. 

The wide receiver's contract imposed a $19.97 million cap number for 2023.

Za'Darius Smith has informed the Minnesota Vikings that he wants to be released, according to a report.

The Vikings have no plans to cut the linebacker.

In eight seasons -- four with the Baltimore Ravens, three with the Green Bay Packers and just one with the Vikings -- Smith has 54.5 sacks, 12 passes defensed, nine forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.

Justin Jefferson led the NFL in both receptions and receiving yards this past season, but Kevin O'Connell believes the young star can do more.

"As crazy as this sounds, leading the league in yards and receptions, I think he and I have just scratched the surface of where we want to go as an offense, particularly with him as our premier receiver," the Minnesota Vikings coach said.

In his third season, Jefferson had 128 catches for 1,809 yards and eight touchdowns.

Set to earn just $2.399 million in 2023, with a potential fifth-year team option in 2024, Jefferson is due a massive pay increase.

Jefferson's 4,825 career yards are the most in NFL history for a receiver in the first three years of a career.
