Tua Tagovailoa Still Dolphins Quarterback 'If He's Healthy'

Nov 30, 2020 9:00 AM

The Miami Dolphins have played it safe with Tua Tagovailoa and his injured thumb, but Brian Flores says the rookie remains the team's starting quarterback "if he's healthy."

Ryan Fitzpatrick started in Sunday's 20-3 win over the New York Jets.

"Yeah, if he's healthy, he's the guy," Flores said of Tagovailoa. "I don't know how many different ways we have to continue to say that. You keep asking, I'll keep answering the same way. Again, he's dealing with something with the hand. We'll take it day-to-day. He's a tough kid. He wants to be out there. Thankfully, we have other guys who stepped up. We can talk about Tua, but we had 52 other guys who went out there and played their butts off today in all three phases. We were able to get a division win on the road. We're excited to win. We'll enjoy the win and then turn the page and move on to the next opponent, the Bengals."

Tua Tagovailoa Remains Miami's Starter Despite Benching

Nov 23, 2020 2:07 PM

Ryan Fitzpatrick replaced Tua Tagovailoa in the fourth quarter of the Miami Dolphins' 20-13 loss to the Denver Broncos on Sunday, but the rookie remains the starting quarterback.

Brian Flores made it clear after the game that there will be no wholesale changes at quarterback.

"Tua wasn't injured. We just felt like it was the best move at that point of the game. We had to get in two-minute mode, and we felt like [Fitzpatrick] gave us the best chance to win the game, and we had an opportunity at the end to tie it," Flores said.

The Dolphins trailed 20-10 when Tagovailoa was benched, with Flores saying the team needed a spark.

Philip Rivers Passes Dan Marino On All-Time Passing List

Nov 13, 2020 9:03 AM

Philip Rivers completed his first pass on Thursday night, an 11-yard strike to Jonathan Taylor, that allowed him to pass Dan Marino on the NFL's all-time passing yardage list.

Rivers entered the game needing just three yards to pass Marino (61,361 yards).

"It's special, it's special," Rivers said. "Those guys up there on that list, I don't know that I'm in their category and that's OK, but Dan Marino was on my wall. He was a poster on my wall as a young boy in Decatur and Athens, Alabama, so it's special.

"Thankful that I've been able to play long enough. Thankful that I've been healthy enough to play over 230 in a row now and watching Dan Marino, meeting Dan Marino at the Senior Bowl, playing against his teams, it's all special. It's all just special and thankful that here, at 38, I'm still getting out here and competing and playing the game I love."

Lamar Jackson Ties Dan Marino For Best Start By Quarterback

Nov 9, 2020 7:40 AM

Lamar Jackson entered his name into the record books with the Baltimore Ravens' 24-10 win over the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday afternoon.

Overcoming a halftime deficit for the first time in his career, Jackson improved in 25-5 in his first 30 NFL starts. He tied Dan Marino for the best 30-game start by a quarterback since 1966.

"It's pretty cool, I'm up there with a Hall of Famer," Jackson said. "But you still got to win each and every game. So, it's all right."

Jackson had been 0-6 when trailing at halftime with two of those games coming in the playoffs.

Dolphins Insist They're Not Auditioning Tua Tagovailoa

Nov 5, 2020 4:49 PM

Brian Flores clarified that the Miami Dolphins are not auditioning Tua Tagovailoa for the remainder of 2020 to figure out whether they want to select another quarterback in the 2021 NFL Draft.

"There's a couple things out there, let's call it a source close to Dolphins thinking, saying that we are auditioning Tua. I'm just going to tell you about my thinking. We brought Tua here because we believe in him, same as all the other draft picks. We believe in developing players ... and improving players on a daily basis," Flores said. "That would be the opposite of giving someone a 10-game audition. That's just my thinking on that, just so everybody's clear."

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Sunday that one factor that contributed to the Dolphins' decision to name Tagovailoa as their starting quarterback.

The Dolphins own the first and second round picks of the Houston Texans next April.

Dolphins Want To Test Tua Tagovailoa Well Ahead Of 2021 Draft

Nov 1, 2020 2:49 PM

One of the reasons why the Miami Dolphins made the decision to start Tua Tagovailoa as their starting quarterback was to have ample time to evaluate him before next year's draft.

The Dolphins own the first and second round picks of the Houston Texans in 2021, which could give them the opportunity to select a quarterback should they decide Tagovailoa is not their solution at the position long-term.

"That's definitely a part of it," one source close to the Dolphins' thinking told ESPN, regarding Miami's recent decision to replace popular veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick with Tagovailoa. "Whoever told you that is right."

Clemson's Trevor Lawrence, Ohio State's Justin Fields and North Dakota's Trey Lance are the three top quarterback prospects.
