Marcedes Lewis Plans To End Holdout

Jul 31, 2014 4:56 AM

Jaguars tight end Marcedes Lewis will end his short holdout on Monday by reporting to camp with the team. "Basically they still are negotiating but I'm tired of not being with my team! And I need to be there..." Lewis told The Florida Times-Union via text message. The Jaguars franchised Lewis in February and the Pro Bowl tight end signed his franchise tender in March. The franchise tag would pay him $7.3 million for a one-year deal, but Lewis does not want to play for a one-year deal.

Jaguars Want To Re-Sign Lewis

Jul 31, 2014 5:30 AM

Once the NFL lockout ends, Jacksonville's first priority will be to re-sign some of their own free agents. The Jaguars will work to retain franchised tight end Marcedes Lewis, as well as retain linebacker Kirk Morrison and punter Adam Podlesh. When asked where signing Lewis to a long-term deal would fall on the team's checklist, Jaguars general manager Gene Smith replied, "at the top." "Our own players will always be our first priority," Smith said. "I've said this before that it is our objective to get a long-term deal done with Marcedes."

Lockout Taking Coaches Off Hot Seat?

Nov 22, 2014 6:29 AM

A number of NFL head coaches that are believed to be entering the season on the hot seat may not feel as much heat as in previous years because of the lengthy lockout. The National Football Post mentioned Jacksonville's Jack Del Rio, Houston's Gary Kubiak and Miami's Tony Sparano as coaches that would normally be on the chopping block.

Del Rio: Gabbert's Growth Impacted By Lockout

Jul 31, 2014 5:15 AM

Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio acknowledged in a recent interview that this year's class of rockies will be most impacted by the lengthy NFL lockout. Jacksonville likely won't rush first-round draft pick Blaine Gabbert into starting this season because of veteran quarterback David Garrard's presence, but the lockout may have helped make the decision for them. "I think certainly we took him high (10th overall) because we think he has talent and we believe long term he has a chance to be special," Del Rio said. "In the short term, is it impacted? Absolutely, it's impacted. I mean, the guy who has the most to learn, the most to do, is the quarterback. Just think about going through the progress of the play, getting the play called at the line of scrimmage, making the adjustments ... making sure everyone is lined up properly, making a 'check' if there's another 'check' that goes with the play. It's very complex at our level, and a lot goes into it. That's for every position. But for the quarterback, it is so much more. "I think that's an awful lot to ask a young man to come in a couple of weeks and get it all and have it down pat. I think it takes a little time. Certainly not having an offseason sets that process back, but we're no different than a lot of teams. We understand that."

Jones-Drew: Jaguars Shouldn't Worry About His Knee

Jul 26, 2014 12:01 PM

Maurice Jones-Drew missed the final two games last season with a left knee injury that required surgery. Now he's out to show the Jaguars that they shouldn't worry about his health. "I can still carry the load regardless of what surgery I had or whatnot," Jones-Drew told The Florida Times-Union in a story for Thursday's editions. "They're going to be kind of anxious to throw Rashad (Jennings) in, and they're already kind of scared of my knee. ... I want to be able to be out the gates playing because it's a production-based business. They're already skeptical maybe it's his knee, maybe we're working him too hard, we should give him a break."

Jones-Drew listed himself as currently 80-85 percent after January's surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee. The five-year veteran was hampered by knee pain for most of last season, but still managed to rush for 1,324 yards and five touchdowns.

Jaguars O-Coordinator Koetter Could Be Coveted

Aug 4, 2014 4:43 AM

Jason La Canfora of The NFL Network believes that Jaguars assistant coach Dirk Koetter could soon be coveted on the market. "I believe Dirk Koetter's time is near. The Jaguars' offensive coordinator is on the cusp of taking that next step," La Canfora writes. "If he can continue to get what he has gotten out of Jacksonville's offense without an abundance of talent, especially if he manages to get Blaine Gabbert ready to play despite this lockout, then a move up is imminent."
