Del Rio Wants Gabbert To Learn From Former QBs

Aug 7, 2014 1:05 PM

Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio wants rookie quarterback Blaine Gabbert to learn from former NFL signal-callers. "I'd love to see him spend some time with a Joe Theisman, a Rich Gannon, guys I know well who have done it at the highest level," Del Rio said. "Find out what it takes to be a quarterback in this league, what are some of the things you should and should not be doing. How you manage your time, deal with people pulling at you from different directions, prepare for different teams, digest a playbook. All those things that experience helps with." Gabbert's already benefitted from the mentorship of Jaguars quarterback David Garrard.

Jones-Drew Says Draft Comments Were Taken Out Of Context

Aug 7, 2014 2:33 PM

Jaguars running back Maurice Jones-Drew, who was critical of the team's draft decisions recently, says his comments were taken out of context. It had been reported that Jacksonville's decision to draft a quarterback in the first round upset him. "No, I said I was shocked," Jones-Drew said. "I said that from the jump. Now it's kind of like all these things are coming up. ... [It's] people taking everything out of context, trying to stir up some controversy. I guess that's what they're supposed to do. I know on this show we just tell it how it is." Even before the draft, Jones-Drew said quarterback wasn't the team's biggest need. Then, the day after Gabbert was drafted, he spoke in support of Jaguars quarterback David Garrard, saying: "David's our guy and he's always going to be our guy."

MJD Would Love To See NFL In L.A; Torn On Jaguars Moving

Aug 7, 2014 1:08 PM

Jaguars running back Maurice Jones-Drew would love to see the NFL return to Los Angeles, but he isn't completely sold on the idea of his team being the one to move there. Jones-Drew played college football at UCLA. "You really don't pay attention to it at all," Jones-Drew said of rumors that Jacksonville could relocate. "For me it's win, win. I love Jacksonville. It's a great place for me to raise a family. I have three kids now. I'm married, I play golf. There is golf everywhere. "To come back home to play in front of my family, so they don't have to travel 2,000 miles to see me play, that is something I would love as well." The Jaguars are one of the teams that have been linked to Los Angeles. The Raiders are another. "The Raiders have always been Oakland," Jones-Drew said. "They tried L.A. and it didn't work out. No disrespect to L.A. but Oakland Raiders just sounds better. I like the L.A. Rams. Oakland Raiders sounds better."

Jones-Drew Issues Support For Garrard

Oct 27, 2014 11:06 PM

Jaguars running back Maurice Jones-Drew has come out in support of veteran quarterback David Garrard. Jacksonville used the 10th overall pick in April's NFL Draft on Missouri quarterback Blaine Gabbert. Jones-Drew, who has rushed for over 1,300 yards in back-to-back seasons, said Monday on "NFL Total Access" that the offense needed more time to develop, not a new face of the franchise. "I just feel like what we needed as an offense wasn't a new quarterback, we just needed another year amongst each other because we had a lot of new players come in," Jones-Drew said. "You see a team like the Patriots or the Steelers or the Colts, those guys (have) been in the same system for the 10, 12 years together, and so that's what we're trying to grow right now." Jones-Drew admitted he was "very shocked" that the Jags used their first pick on a quarterback.

Lewis Wants More Security From Jags Than Tag

Aug 7, 2014 2:15 PM

Jaguars tight end Marcedes Lewis wants more security from the team than just their franchise tag. Lewis enjoyed the best season of his career in 2010. Jacksonville tagged Lewis in February before the work stoppage. "It's a catch-22, man," Lewis said. "I want a long-term contract, and I know Jacksonville wants me there. I love playing in Jacksonville and who I work with there. But at the same time, who wants to play under a one-year contract? That's not cool. "Especially when you have played five years and given your sweat, blood and tears to the team and laid it out there every Sunday, putting your body on the line. Obviously, it is what it is. I am just sitting here, being patient and trusting that we are going to get it done."

Jaguars Coaches Question NFLCA's Brief

Oct 27, 2014 11:10 PM

The Jaguars coaching staff distanced itself Wednesday from a court brief filed last week by the NFL Coaches Association. Jacksonville coach Jack Del Rio said his staff had no knowledge of the statement, which supported the players in the NFL's labor dispute. "I checked with our guys and not one member of our coaching staff had knowledge of last week's brief filed by the coaches association prior to the news breaking," Del Rio said. "None were consulted or involved in any way. This action was taken without approval. Heck, it wasn't even mentioned to any of us. "We just hope that this all gets resolved soon so we can get back to coaching up our guys."
