The Jaguars traded up to draft Blaine Gabbert on Thursday night and the rookie will compete with veteran David Garrard to be named the team's starting quarterback.
"We feel like we have a very capable player in David," coach Jack Del Rio said. "Certainly, there's going to be competition. We have an opportunity to have a young man with a good skill set come in here and work and earn his way. I don't think you can be strong enough at that position. It's such a premium position in what is really a quarterback-driven league."
Jacksonville traded up six picks to take the Missouri quarterback.

Jaguars Could Trade Back Into Second Round
Jaguars general manager Gene Smith says the team could look to trade back into the second round of Friday night's portion of the 2011 NFL Draft.
"Thats always a possibility," Smith said. "Certainly we make calls overnight just to see what our options are going into the second day. Certainly in our position we'd like to be in another round, but you make moves and you give up a pick and it may take you out of one pick."
Jones-Drew's Recovery Going As Planned
Jaguars running back Maurice Jones-Drew said he's ahead of schedule in his recovery from arthroscopic knee surgery.
Jones-Drew, who said he's already able to run, had surgery in January after playing the entire season with a torn meniscus in his left knee.
"The knee's doing great," Jones-Drew said Tuesday on his weekly Sirius NFL Radio show. "I've been meeting with doctors everyday, just been pushing through, working through everything."
Garrard Preparing For Possible Rookie Competition
Jaguars quarterback David Garrard is preparing for possible competition from a highly-drafted rookie this coming season.
"I know Gene and Jack are going to do their best to get the best players that they feel like this team needs," Garrard said. "I know I'm the starting quarterback for this team, so I'm going to continue to go out and prepare like that and work my butt off to make sure this team, this city wins a championship."
Garrard has spent the past three months rehabilitating his right hand, with which he says is able to throw "just fine."
He is used to hearing the possibility of Jacksonville looking for a replacement.
"Eventually it's going to happen," Garrard said. "I don't have a problem with it."
Jaguars Unlikely To Trade Up For Quarterback
The Jaguars will likely have to trade up in this month's NFL Draft if they plan on taking a developmental quarterback.
If there is any early run on the second tier of quarterback prospects, Jacksonville may have to consider trading up from the No. 49 pick in order to grab one.
However, Gene Frenette of the Florida Times-Union writes that it's unlikely the Jaguars would make such a move.
