Commanders Unlikely To Face Punishment For Contacting Andrew Luck

May 22, 2023 7:13 AM

The Washington Commanders are "unlikely" to face punishment for contacting Andrew Luck, according to a report.

The report explains that "there probably is 'not enough hard evidence' of impermissible contact" for a penalty to be imposed.

The Commanders reportedly reached out to Luck in 2022 when they were searching high and low for a solution at quarterback.

Luck retired with years remaining on his contract, leaving the Indianapolis Colts in control of any possible return to football.

Matt Ryan Won't 'Shut Any Doors' On Possible Return

May 18, 2023 8:56 AM

Matt Ryan has joined CBS Sports as an NFL analyst, but he made sure to note that he isn't officially retiring from football.

Ryan told SiriusXM NFL Radio that he felt keeping the possibility of a return made sense.

"I don't know," Ryan said. "This situation, all the stars would have to [align]. I've just learned, at least during my experience in the 15 years I've played, to just not shut any doors. That's really the decision behind that. ... I'm excited to kind of take this next step and to move forward, but at the same time, you never know what's going to happen in this league. Anything could shake out, and so we'll see what happens."

Ryan, 38, spent 14 seasons with the Atlanta Falcons before spending the 2022 season with the Indianapolis Colts.

Colts Ask NFL To Review Commanders Possible Tampering With Andrew Luck

May 9, 2023 8:38 AM

The Indianapolis Colts have requested that NFL officials look into the possibility of improper contact between the Washington Commanders and Andrew Luck, according to a source.

Luck retired in 2019 with three seasons remaining on his contract. The contract tolled after his departure, meaning that if he were to resume his career, he would remain under contract to the Colts, and any improper contact by another club could constitute a violation of the league's tampering rules.

A Commanders source told ESPN's John Keim on Monday that the team considered Luck, among many other quarterbacks in 2022, but moved on because it figured he would stay retired, so it didn't go any further.

Colts' Jim Irsay Warns Teams About Contacting Andrew Luck

May 8, 2023 8:52 AM

Jim Irsay is warning teams about contacting Andrew Luck.

After learning that the Washington Commanders inquired with Luck last offseason, the Indianapolis Colts owner took to social media Sunday night to warn teams about any correspondence regarding the long-retired Colts quarterback.

"If any NFL team attempted to contact Andrew Luck (or any associate of him) ... to play for their Franchise -- it would be a clear violation of the League's Tampering Policy," Irsay posted on Twitter.

Luck, 33, who retired in 2019 with three seasons remaining on his contract, technically remains the property of the Colts.

The contract tolled after his departure, meaning that if he ever elects to return to the NFL, the Colts would own his rights.
