Xavier Rhodes Agrees To One-Year Deal With Colts

The Indianapolis Colts have agreed to a one-year deal with Xavier Rhodes.

Rhodes hit free agency when he was released by the Minnesota Vikings to create salary cap room. He carried a $12.9 million cap hit and had been under contract through 2022.

The cornerback turns 30 in June.

While Tom Brady had interest in signing with the Indianapolis Colts, they wanted to go in another direction in Philip Rivers on a shorter deal.

Brady also signaled to the San Francisco 49ers during the process that they were his preferred franchise, but they decided to retain Jimmy Garoppolo. 

Brady ultimately signed a two-year deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The New England Patriots have signed Brian Hoyer to a one-year contract worth $1.05 million.

The Indianapolis Colts released Hoyer on Saturday.

Hoyer returns for his third stint with the Patriots, joining 2019 fourth-round draft pick Jarrett Stidham and five-year veteran Cody Kessler as the three quarterbacks on the roster.

Philip Rivers Considered Retirement

Philip Rivers considered retirement this offseason before deciding to continue his career and sign with the Indianapolis Colts on a one-year, $25 million deal.

"I think really where we settled in is I still love to play, certainly not coming off my best year [in 2019], but I know I still can play at a high level," Rivers said. "... It was one of those deals where we said if there's nothing else out there then that'll be our answer. I don't want to just try to hang on to play.

"The fact it ended up being with this organization, it made it that much more exciting to keep going," he added.

ESPN had interest in Rivers for Monday Night Football.

The talks reportedly got to the point of discussing draft pick compensation.

The Los Angeles Chargers and Rivers agreed to part ways earlier this offseason.

The Colts lost Andrew Luck shortly before the start of the 2019 season and started Jacoby Brissett at quarterback.

The San Francisco 49ers have agreed to trade DeForest Buckner to the Indianapolis Colts for the No. 13 pick i the draft.

The Colts have agreed to a new contract with Buckner that will pay him $21 million per season.

Buckner will be the NFL's second highest paid defensive tackle behind Aaron Donald.

Philip Rivers will leave the Los Angeles Chargers this offseason and signing with the Indianapolis Colts "is being treated like a fait accompli by a lot of people from rival teams," according to Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated. 

The Colts started Jacoby Brissett at quarterback in 2019 following the sudden retirement of Andrew Luck.

Nick Foles and Marcus Mariota, who also could be available this offseason, have close ties to the coaching staff of the Colts.
