Lions Release LB Jamie Collins After Exploring Trade

Sep 29, 2021 9:12 AM

The Detroit Lions have released Jamie Collins after attempting to trade him.

The veteran linebacker stopped reporting to practice ahead of Week 3 as the Lions explored options for his future.

Dan Campbell said last week that he met with Collins to communicate the team's plans to seek a trade, but the Lions ultimately couldn't reach a deal for him.

Fans Boo Lions Owner At Calvin Johnson's Ceremony

Sep 27, 2021 9:09 AM

Detroit Lions fans expressed their frustration with ownership by mercilessly booing Sheila Ford Hamp during Calvin Johnson's Hall of Fame ring ceremony.

During halftime of Sunday's game against the Baltimore Ravens, Ford Hamp was trying to congratulate the legendary receiver, but was showered with boos. Johnson seemed a bit uncomfortable at first as he tried to quiet the boos by pushing his hands to the ground with a hand gesture.

Despite his sour relationship with the organization after being forced to pay back a little more than $1 million to the Lions upon his retirement after the 2015 season, Johnson returned to Ford Field to receive his ring.

The money was part of the signing bonus he had been given at the start of his final contract.

"It's an honor to represent excellence and everything that the Hall of Fame stands for," Johnson said on the field. "It's an honor to represent Detroit, I love you guys. And it's an honor to represent the NFL and the Johnson name on my back. I love you guys. I love the energy that y'all brought every Sunday. I miss you guys and I look forward to great things in the future here in Detroit."

Calvin Johnson: Lions Still Owe Me $1.6M

Sep 16, 2021 9:13 AM

Calvin Johnson has opened up about his feud with the Detroit Lions.

In an interview with Graham Bensinger, the Hall of Fame wide receiver says the Lions still owe him more than a million dollars.

"I'm not gonna close a chapter, but I'm not gonna bend over backwards to try and do anything, because I didn't do anything. I did my job," Johnson said. "I'm not saying they gotta repay me the $1.6 (million) all up front, but they need to figure out a way to do it and not have me work for it. Because I already did the work for it."

According to an August story in the Detroit Free Press, Johnson was forced to repay the Lions $1.6 million of his signing bonus when he retired after the 2015 season.

The Lions had allegedly offered Johnson a three-year deal that would have paid Johnson $500,000 annually for appearance fees and a $100,000 donation for Johnson's charity, but Johnson did not take the offer, believing it showed the team was "not serious" about resolving the issue.

D'Andre Swift Won't Be Limited In Week 1

Sep 10, 2021 8:55 AM

D'Andre Swift, who had been slowed by a groin injury throughout the preseason, is expected to be ready to go with no limitations for the Detroit Lions in Sunday's season opener against the San Francisco 49ers.

Lions coaches had expressed concerns during training camp about Swift's status.

"I'm very bad at counting reps," Lions running backs coach Duce Staley said. "If he's out there being productive ... I don't know how to take him off.

"I get caught up in the game, he's gonna get caught up in the game and every good player -- every good running back that I know anyway -- once he starts feeling it, you don't want to pull him off. We can count the reps Monday."
