Lions: No Calls For Roy Williams

Jun 15, 2014 2:04 AM

Despite rumors that the Lions could deal disgruntled wide receiver Roy Williams before the Oct. 14 trade deadline, the team claims they haven't received calls about him. Lions' chief operating officer Tom Lewand said Monday that no teams have called inquiring about Williams. "I wouldn't call either. Eight catches, 113 yards, and one touchdown - I wouldn't call either," said Williams. "I heard the buzz in the off-season, but I haven't heard anything (recently). That's why it makes it easier for me to concentrate on what we do." Williams expects to be in Detroit through the season. "I've been expecting to be here. That hasn't changed at all," he said.

Cris Carter's Criticism Of Millen Inconsistent?

Jun 15, 2014 2:04 AM

Cris Carter criticized former Detroit Lions general manager Matt Millen for drafting wideouts Mike Williams and Charles Rogers. Carter helped both Williams and Rogers train before their respective drafts. And this is what he said about that on Sunday: ?Matt Millen ? do a little undercover work. (Mike) Williams and Charlie Rogers both worked out with me before the draft. I could have told him, don?t draft neither one of them. (He) never asked me.? Yahoo's Charles Robinson researched what Carter said at the time about Rogers, to the Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel just before the 2003 draft: ?He?s very similar ? and I don?t like to make a lot of comparisons ? to Randy (Moss) in a sense, a big basketball player playing wide receiver. He?s the only receiver that?s come out since Randy that you can make an honest comparison to. He has a yearning to learn.? And Carter?s comments about Williams, to the St. Paul Pioneer Press just before the 2005 draft: ?I think he?s going to be a great player. I think people will be surprised at the kind of person he is. He?s really a hard worker. He takes his training very seriously and wants to be very good.? RealGM Note: It is quite common for coaches and players to express very different sentiments about another player off the record as they do on the record.

Floyd Reese Wants Lions GM Job?

Nov 1, 2014 11:06 AM

Floyd Reese, the former general manager of the Titans, appears to be openly campaigning for the Lions' job. ?If I had Williams Clay Ford's number, you'd be hearing a dial tone right now. I'm in a unique situation. I've been in the league 32 years. ... I could be in Detroit tomorrow." ?One of the real uncut gems in the NFL is Detroit. It has a great owner. He's got a lot of money. He wants to win very badly, and he's not one of those guys that's on the sidelines. He just wants to find someone that can help him win.?

Mariucci: Ford Jr. Will Be Great Decision-Maker For Lions

Aug 16, 2014 3:45 PM

Steve Mariucci is familiar with the situation in Detroit due to his time as their head coach, and he weighed in on the firing of Matt Millen and the future of the franchise. "(I) think that Bill Ford Jr. will be so good with that team when the time comes, and he has the authority to make decisions. He will talk with the coaches; he?s in the locker room with the players; he?s lifting weights. He?s got an office over there that he uses ? he?s visible, he?s hands-on, he?s there, he?s in the mix ? and that is so important for an owner." "Whereas Senior wasn?t really able to do that ? he?d travel to games. Junior will be more hands-on and able to do those things that I believe will really be helpful. "I believe that Senior has done his part in providing the right facilities and workplace and venue for the fans and the employees, and I think going forward, they?ll find a person in there that loves the personnel end of it, who studies personnel year-round, who surrounds himself with a very capable scouting staff that he leans on."

Lions' Williams Looking Forward To Free Agency

May 24, 2014 8:01 AM

Roy Williams can remember every loss he had in high school and at the University of Texas, but remembering losses with the Lions has been a more challenging proposition. ?I started counting them up last off-season,? Williams said, ?but I lost track.? Williams is finishing his five-year rookie contract and could be eligible for free agency this off-season. ?Everybody would like to stay where they are drafted,? Williams said. ?But at the same time, everybody would like to go back home as they get older. My home is Texas.? RealGM Note: Williams has been the 32nd best wide receiver through the first three weeks of 2008. He 'deserves' a salary of $3.5 million and therefore has a Reina Value of -44%.

Lions quarterback Jon Kitna suffered a sprained left knee in the fourth quarter of Sunday's loss to the 49ers, according to Detroit Free Press. "It feels pretty bad right now," Kitna said Sunday night. "They say it doesn't feel like anything structural right now." Kitna said the injury was a culmination of four or five tough hits. "Sometimes when you have kind of a bruise on your knee or some trauma to it, and then it happens again, the pain is pretty excruciating for a minute, and then it subsides," Kitna said. "And that was kind of what was happening."

Martz Expected To 'Dial It Up' Against Detroit

Aug 18, 2014 3:41 PM

A number of Lions players expect Mike Martz to dial up the offense on Sunday when the 49ers take on the coordinator's former team, according to Detroit Free Press. "He's going to dial it up," receiver Mike Furrey said. "Mike's a competitor, too," Furrey added. "He gets to call the plays. He gets to go out there and do stuff. He loves to win. That's Mike." "He would love to probably throw for a lot of yards and run for a lot of yards to show he can have a balanced team and stuff like that," receiver Shaun McDonald said. "But I'm pretty sure he wants to win. That's his main goal."
