Lions Sign Drew Henson To Replace Stanton

The Lions have signed quarterback Drew Henson to replace the injured Drew Stanton, according to The Detroit News. Henson, who has not played in the NFL since the Minnesota Vikings cut him during their 2007 training camp, worked out Friday for the team. Stanton's hand will likely be in a cast for four weeks before he is able to resume throwing, after he sprained a thumb on his throwing hand during practice on Thursday.

Lions' running back Tatum Bell is thrilled that Mike Martz is no longer the team's offensive coordinator, according to The Detroit News. "I am glad Martz is gone, and you can tell him I said it, too," Bell said. "I think he played me. He was not honest with me as a man or as a coach, and my position coach (Wilbert Montgomery) didn't have anything to say either. Nobody was telling me stuff." Bell ran 15 times in the season opener but earned only 29 more carries the rest of the season.

Lions' rookie running back Kevin Smith predicted on Tuesday that the team will win their first playoff game in seventeen years this season, according to The Detroit News. "One playoff win in 50 years?" Smith asked. "Wow. We will get to the playoffs this year. We will win a playoff game this year." Smith also said that his goal is to win a Super Bowl within his first three years in the NFL "because I am about winning championships." Detroit finished 7-9 last season, racing out to a 6-2 record before stumbling in the second half.

Lions quarterback Jon Kitna believes that the team has learned from last year's collapse, according to MLive.com. "It took me a long time to get over last year," Kitna said of last season's rough second half. "A real long time." Detroit lost seven of their final eight games. "We didn't show the professionalism and the commitment to get where we wanted to go. It's not just about showing up on Sunday, and if you don't know your stuff inside out, you're not going to stand a chance," Kitna added.
