May 2008 - Detroit Lions Wiretap
Titans Stuff Winless Lions
The Titans ran all over the Lions on Thursday afternoon, 47-10, thanks to strong efforts by Chris Johnson and LenDale White.
Kerry Collins went 11-for-18 with 127 passing yards, and Vince Young went 1-for-1 with 54 yards in garbage time.
Johnson rushed sixteen times for 125 yards and two touchdowns, and White added 106 yards and two scores on twenty-three carries.
Tennessee rushed out to a 35-10 lead at the half and never looked back.
Daunte Culpepper went 13-for-26 with 134 yards, one touchdown and an interception in the loss. Drew Henson, who also came on late in the fourth, went 1-for-2 with 20 passing yards.
Rookie Kevin Smith managed just 22 yards on twelve carries, and Calvin Johnson caught five passes for 66 yards.
The Loins had just one more first down (6), than the Titans had touchdowns (5) in the game.
Lions' Hanson Ties Record With 53-yarder
Detroit kicker Jason Hanson tied an NFL record on Thursday when he kicked a 53-yard field goal against Tennessee.
Hanson made his 40th field goal from 50-plus yards, tying Morten Anderson's record for the most kicks beyond the distance.
Lions Sign Henson To Two-Year Contract
The Lions have signed quarterback Drew Henson to a two-year contract, and he will backup Daunte Culpepper this Thursday against the Titans.
He last played in an NFL game in 2004, a start on Thanksgiving for the Cowboys.
"Apparently, I only play on Thanksgivings," Henson joked Monday. "The irony is definitely there."
Lions Take Early Lead
The winless Lions took a quick 17-0 lead over the Buccaneers through one quarter on Sunday afternoon.
Daunte Culpepper hooked up with Calvin Johnson on a 15-yard pass at the 6:07 mark of the quarter, giving Detroit a 7-0 edge.
Daniel Bullocks then returned a fumble by quarterback Jeff Garcia 44 yards for second score soon after.
After another strong drive, Jason Hanson kicked a 36-yard field goal to give Detroit 17-0 lead after fifteen minutes.
Tampa Bay answered early in the second quarter on a 13-yard run by Warrick Dunn, cutting Detroit's lead to 17-7.
Then, Garcia connected with Ike Hillard on a 36-yard pass to bring the Bucs to within three, 17-14 midway through the second quarter.
Lions: Homestand Is Best Shot At Win
The Lions will play their next three games at home, beginning on Sunday, and the players believe the homestand represents their best chance at posting a victory.
"Yeah, if the crowd is behind us," said cornerback Leigh Bodden. "That's what a homefield advantage is for. It should be an advantage being at home but this year it really isn't."
In four home games this season, the Lions (0-10) have been beaten by 23 points or more three times.
"I'm not sure, it shouldn't be that way," kicker Jason Hanson said. "We have a three-game homestand to get our win. It has to come in the next three. We have something to play for, we should have some energy. It might come from the crowd if we play well, but we can't count on it because we've ditched them along the way. This is the time -- if it's going to happen it's got to be in these three weeks."
Lions Wish They Would Have Signed Culpepper Sooner
Rod Marinelli has done nothing but rave about Culpepper since the nine-year veteran joined the Lions a few weeks ago.
"I'm thankful he's here," Marinelli said Wednesday.
He even said he wishes he would have had Culpepper sooner.
Detroit's Smith: 'We Have Slim Playoff Hopes'
Lions' rookie running back Kevin Smith still believes that the team, 0-10, has a chance to make the playoffs.
"There's still a good chance," Smith said. "I'm going to be real now -- we're 0-10 and the playoffs are probably slim to nothing. I'm going to keep it at slim, though. I'll leave slim in there. You learn from this."
Detroit is five games out of first place in the NFC North with Green Bay, Chicago, and Minnesota all tied at 5-5 through Week 11.
Mathematically, a loss this weekend, combined with a win by any of their division rivals, would eliminate them from playoff contention.
Could The Lions Have An Edge On Tampa Bay?
The Lions have yet to win a game in 2008, but Jon Gruden thinks they could have an edge against his team because Detroit head coach Rod Marinelli and defensive coordinator Joe Barry are former Bucs assistants. The Lions' defense also includes five former Bucs: tackle Chuck Darby, cornerback Brian Kelly, linebacker Ryan Nece, safety Kalvin Pearson, and end Dewayne White.
"The Detroit Lions, they'll know more about us than any team we play all year," Gruden said. "They have a lot of our former coaches and players there. This will be a big game for them.
Culpepper: Peppers A 'Red Alert' Guy
Lions' quarterback Daunte Culpepper praised Panthers' defensive end Julius Peppers after he was sacked twice by the defender on Sunday.
"When we do our game plans on Wednesday, he's the guy who has 'red alert' on him," said Culpepper, who previously faced Peppers while playing for the Vikings. "We always have to know where he is.
"He's a game-changer. He's an absolute beast out there. I love competing against him because he's one of the best."
Peppers has nine sacks on the season.
First Meeting Of 11-0 And 0-11 Teams In History?
The Titans will travel to the Lions on Thanksgiving, and if both teams remain undefeated and without a win respectively, it will be the first time in NFL history, according to Elias, that an 11-0 team has never faced an 0-11 team in NFL history.
