Daunte Culpepper hooked up with Calvin Johnson on a 15-yard pass at the 6:07 mark of the quarter, giving Detroit a 7-0 edge. Daniel Bullocks then returned a fumble by quarterback Jeff Garcia 44 yards for second score soon after. After another strong drive, Jason Hanson kicked a 36-yard field goal to give Detroit 17-0 lead after fifteen minutes. Tampa Bay answered early in the second quarter on a 13-yard run by Warrick Dunn, cutting Detroit's lead to 17-7. Then, Garcia connected with Ike Hillard on a 36-yard pass to bring the Bucs to within three, 17-14 midway through the second quarter.
