The Broncos drafted Miller with the second overall pick in 2011.

John Elway: Brian Flores' Allegations 'False And Defamatory'

Feb 4, 2022 8:51 AM

John Elway called allegations about him included in Brian Flores' lawsuit against the league and three teams "false and defamatory."

The Denver Broncos president of football operations interviewed Flores for the team's head-coaching job in 2019.

In his lawsuit, Flores and his representatives allege Elway and team CEO Joe Ellis "showed up an hour late to the interview. They looked completely disheveled, and it was obvious that they had drinking heavily the night before."

The Broncos' interview was also labeled a "sham" and "that the Broncos never had any intention to consider him as a legitimate candidate for the job."

Elway released a lengthy statement Thursday in response to Flores' potential class-action lawsuit.

"While I was not planning to respond publicly to the false and defamatory claims by Brian Flores, I could not be silent any longer with my character, integrity and professionalism being attacked," Elway said in his statement.

"I took Coach Flores very seriously as a candidate for our head coaching position in 2019 and enjoyed our three-and-a-half hour interview with him. Along with the rest of our group, I was prepared, ready and fully engaged during the entire interview as Brian shared his experience and vision for our team."

Broncos Up For Sale, Likely To Fetch Record Price

Feb 2, 2022 8:21 AM

The Denver Broncos are officially up for sale and will likely have the biggest price tag in North American sports history.

The team is valued at just under $4 billion.

Steve Cohen paid $2.4 billion in 2020 for the New York Mets, the highest price paid for a North American sports franchise.

In a statement, Broncos CEO Joe Ellis said: "The Pat Bowlen Trust announced today the beginning of a sale process for the Denver Broncos. We have retained Steve Greenberg of Allen & Company as our financial advisor and Joe Leccese of Proskauer Rose LLP as our legal advisor for this transition of ownership.

"Selling an NFL team is a complex process involving numerous parties and league approval procedures. Nonetheless, the trustees hope to have the sale completed by the start of the 2022 NFL season.

"The Broncos are a special franchise that is part of the fabric of this region, and whoever emerges as the new owner will certainly understand what the team means to our great fans and this community."

Brian Flores Sues NFL, Three Teams, Alleging Racism In Hiring

Feb 2, 2022 9:31 PM

Brian Flores has sued the NFL and three of its teams, alleging racist hiring practices by the league have left it racially segregated and managed like a plantation.

The lawsuit filed in Manhattan federal court sought class-action status and unspecified damages from the league, the Miami Dolphins, the Denver Broncos and the New York Giants, along with unidentified individuals.

Flores was fired by the Dolphins this offseason in what was widely considered a surprising move.

"God has gifted me with a special talent to coach the game of football, but the need for change is bigger than my personal goals," Flores said in a release put out by the law firm representing him in the case. "In making the decision to file the class action complaint today, I understand that I may be risking coaching the game that I love and that has done so much for my family and me. My sincere hope is that by standing up against systemic racism in the NFL, others will join me to ensure that positive change is made for generations to come.''

The lawsuit alleged that the league has discriminated against Flores and other Black coaches for racial reasons, denying them positions as head coaches, offensive and defensive coordinators and quarterbacks coaches, as well as general managers.

"In certain critical ways, the NFL is racially segregated and is managed much like a plantation,'' the lawsuit said. "Its 32 owners -- none of whom are Black -- profit substantially from the labor of NFL players, 70% of whom are Black. The owners watch the games from atop NFL stadiums in their luxury boxes, while their majority-Black workforce put their bodies on the line every Sunday, taking vicious hits and suffering debilitating injuries to their bodies and their brains while the NFL and its owners reap billions of dollars."

Josh McDaniels: Broncos Failure Prepped Me For Raiders

Feb 1, 2022 8:59 AM

Josh McDaniels believes his failure as the head coach of the Denver Broncos helped prepare him to succeed with the Las Vegas Raiders.

"When I went to Denver, I knew a little bit of football," McDaniels said of his 28-game tenure with the Broncos over the 2009 and '10 seasons. "I didn't really know people and how important that aspect of this process and maintaining the culture and building the team was. I failed, and I didn't succeed at it.

"Looking at that experience has been one of the best things in my life in terms of my overall growth as a person, as a coach. What do I need to do different, how do I need to handle my role, if I have another opportunity, and do better at it?"

McDaniels was just 33 years old when he left the New England Patriots for the Broncos. He was fired by Denver after posting an 11-17 record. He went to the then-St. Louis Rams in 2011 as their offensive coordinator and back to the Patriots a year later before verbally accepting the head job with the Indianapolis Colts in 2018, then backing out.

McDaniels said the Raiders, who also hired his good friend and Patriots confidant in Dave Ziegler as general manager, presented the right opportunity at the right time.

"I was very impressed with how exhaustive they were, just in their evaluation of me and my fit and how I would fit into their vision, and then you come out and you spend time with them, you meet the people, you see that everything is done in a first-class manner," said McDaniels, who has been an NFL offensive coordinator/playcaller since 2006. "Their commitment to winning is easy to feel, to see, and, to me, walking through this building and having a sense of the history and tradition of this organization and how much that impacts the day-to-day here, it really hit me.

"This is one of those iconic places, and it's a historic organization that has unbelievable history and tradition. It's in every hallway. Just getting to know them, feeling their commitment and understanding that that really married up with what my vision would be for another opportunity. It was easy to make the choice."
