Russell Wilson: Wish I Played Better For Nathaniel Hackett

Dec 29, 2022 8:28 AM

Russell Wilson labeled his own disappointing season as a regret in the wake of Nathaniel Hackett's firing Monday as the Denver Broncos' head coach.

"The reality is I wish I could have played better for him, too," Wilson said. "I wish I could have played at the standard, the level that I've always played at, know how to play at."

Hackett was fired 15 games into his first season as Broncos coach with the team at 4-11 and with the lowest-scoring offense in the league at 15.5 points per game.

Wilson, in his first season with the team since the blockbuster trade to acquire him in March, has 12 touchdown passes in his 13 starts.

Broncos Still Believe In Russell Wilson, Say QB Is 'Fixable'

Dec 28, 2022 8:47 AM

Denver Broncos owner Greg Penner and general manager George Paton say they believe in Russell Wilson and that his subpar play for much of the season was not the driving factor in the decision to fire Nathaniel Hackett this week.

"The decision to have Russell here is a long-term one," Penner said. "This season has not been up to his standards or expectations. We saw some glimpses of it in the last few weeks. He knows he can play better; we know he can play better; and we know he'll do the right work in the offseason to be ready for next year."

The Broncos traded five draft picks, including a 2023 first-round selection that now projects to be in the top three picks of next April's draft, as well as three players to the Seattle Seahawks this past March in exchange for Wilson.

"Russ even said he didn't play up to his standard. ... He'd be the first one to tell you he didn't play up to his standard, didn't play up to our standard, he needs to be better," Paton said. "I don't think we made a coaching move based on Russ. That wasn't what it was all about, that's not why we're getting a new coach to turn around Russ. It's about the entire organization. ... It's not whether Russ is fixable or not. We do believe he is; we do."

Broncos Fire Head Coach Nathaniel Hackett

Dec 26, 2022 1:15 PM

The Denver Broncos fired first-year head coach Nathaniel Hackett on Monday.

The move comes after a 4-11 start and Sunday's 51-14 loss to the Los Angeles Rams.

Hackett's dismissal puts an abrupt end to the shortest tenure of any non-interim head coach in franchise history. The Broncos' new ownership -- the Walton-Penner Group, led by Walmart heir Rob Walton, his daughter Carrie Walton Penner and son-in-law Greg Penner -- quickly ran out of patience for a team with one of the league's best defenses with an offense that simply could not score.

Former Broncos RB Ronnie Hillman Dies At 31

Dec 22, 2022 8:37 AM

Ronnie Hillman died Wednesday, his family announced.

Hillman, the leading rusher for the Super Bowl-winning 2015 Denver Broncos, had been battling a rare form of cancer called renal medullary carcinoma since August.

"It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved son, brother [and] father, Ronnie K Hillman Jr.," Wednesday's statement read in part. "Ronnie quietly and peacefully transitioned today in the company of his family and close friends.

"We as the family, appreciate the prayers and kind words that have already been expressed. We ask that you would give us time to process our feelings as we prepare to lay our precious RJ to rest."

Over five seasons with the Broncos, Minnesota Vikings and Los Angeles Chargers, Hillman tallied 494 carries for 1,976 yards, 12 touchdowns and another 534 yards receiving.

Broncos Aren't Considering Quarterback Change

Dec 1, 2022 8:53 AM

Nathaniel Hackett says the Denver Broncos aren't currently considering a change at quarterback.

"Right now, no," the first-year coach said when asked if making a change would give the Broncos a better chance to win.

Denver is 3-8 after pulling of a blockbuster trade to acquire Russell Wilson from the Seattle Seahawks this offseason. No team has scored fewer points in the NFL.
