The Chicago Bears have acquired Montez Sweat from the Washington Commanders for a second round pick in 2024.

Sweat is in the final season of his contract.

Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Las Vegas Raiders because of the dislocated thumb in his right hand.

Fields, 24, was classified as doubtful on Monday by coach Matt Eberflus and did not practice during the week. Rookie backup Tyson Bagent will start against Las Vegas, becoming just the fourth Division II QB to start an NFL game in the past 20 years.

Six weeks into the season, the Chicago Bears have just one win.

However, the team's future looks a lot brighter thanks to their draft capital.

Chicago currently holds both the first and second overall picks in the NFL's 2024 draft.

The Bears own pick would be No. 2, while they'll also receive the No. 1 pick from the winless Carolina Panthers as part of the trade that involved the 2023 first overall pick.

Bears quarterback Justin Fields sustained an injury to his right hand in the third quarter of Chicago's 19-13 loss to the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday and was ruled out.

Coach Matt Eberflus, in his postgame news conference, said that X-rays on Fields' hand were negative. He will undergo an MRI on Monday.

The Bears have been down a member of their defensive coaching staff for the past four weeks because of the absence and then sudden resignation of coordinator Alan Williams on Sept. 20.

Coach Matt Eberflus said Monday that he plans to continue calling defensive plays but is looking to hire a senior defensive analyst to help with advance scouting of Chicago's future opponents.

"It would give us certainly ideas and things, how to attack that upcoming opponent," Eberflus said. "Just to get another set of eyes for advancing for us in that."

The Chicago Bears have traded Chase Claypool to the Miami Dolphins. The Dolphins will send a sixth round pick in 2025 in exchange for Claypool and a seven rounder in that draft.

Chicago team officials had told Claypool on Monday he would be inactive against Washington and requested that he remain away from the team while the Bears prepared for the Commanders.

Claypool ended up playing 10 games in Chicago over two seasons, totaling 18 receptions for 191 yards and one touchdown. 

The Chicago Bears ended the longest losing streak in franchise history with a 40-20 win over the Washington Commanders on Thursday night.

The Bears hadn't won a game in 346 days amid an 0-4 start that raised questions about the futures of coach Matt Eberflus and quarterback Justin Fields.

"Pretty bad, I'm not going to lie," Cole Kmet said when asked how badly the team needed a victory.

"I think the emotion I felt literally until ... the clock hit zero was relief. It's been a long time coming to get this first win. We've got a lot of talent; we've just got to put it together. These types of performances can carry over, but we have to be able to execute and be in sync as a group."

In five games this season, wide receiver D.J. Moore has 531 receiving yards and five touchdowns after a huge effort on Thursday night.

Dick Butkus, who was widely regarded as one of the greatest linebackers in NFL history, has died at the age of 80.

Butkus passed away "peacefully in his sleep overnight" in his Malibu, California, home, according to the Chicago Bears.

The Pro Football Hall of Famer was born in Chicago and played his entire football career in the state of Illinois -- first as a star at Chicago Vocational High School, then as a two-time All-American at Illinois, and finally as an all-time Bears legend.

Chase Claypool will miss his second straight game this week after the Chicago Bears told him to stay home in the wake of critical comments late last week about the way the team has used him.

Matt Eberflus said that the decision to deactivate Claypool wasn't a direct reaction to those comments, but they played a role.

Justin Fields said Tuesday that he spoke to the wide receiver and that Claypool "definitely would" take the comments back if he could.

"I think he knows that he kind of messed up by saying that, but I wish him nothing but the best," Fields said. "He's a talented player, and he's a great person, has a good heart and works really hard. Definitely going to be staying in touch with him regardless of what happens."

Chase Claypool will not be with the Chicago Bears this week or play Thursday night against the Washington Commanders, Matt Eberflus said.

"This morning, we informed him that he's not going to be here this week for the game as well, and we just feel that's best for the team at this time," Eberflus said.

Claypool was a healthy scratch for Chicago's 31-28 loss to the Denver Broncos. The wide receiver was not at Soldier Field on Sunday and was told not to attend the game, according to a team spokesperson.
