Owners Seeking Expansion Of Regular Season In New CBA

Aug 27, 2019 10:35 AM

NFL owners are pushing to expand the 16-game regular season as part of their new collective bargaining agreement with the players.

The players have shown little interest in the idea.

The players are seeking an increase in their share of revenue in the next CBA, but the owners have indicated that's a non-starter without expanding the season.

The NFL could expand to 17 or 18 games or add an extra round of players. All of these concepts include shortening the preseason, which both sides favor.

The retirement of Andrew Luck has had an effect on the mindset of players as they were already disinclined to expand the season.

Aug 13, 2019 4:29 PM

Roc Nation and the NFL have agreed to a deal in which the entertainment company will lead the league's endeavors in music and entertainment.

Roc Nation will advise on the selection of artists for events such as the Super Bowl.

Both parties also will work to amplify the league's Inspire Change initiative.

"With its global reach, the National Football League has the platform and opportunity to inspire change across the country," Jay-Z said. "Roc Nation has shown that entertainment and enacting change are not mutually exclusive ideas -- instead, we unify them. This partnership is an opportunity to strengthen the fabric of communities across America."

Likewise, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell is excited about the possibilities.

"Roc Nation is one of the most globally influential and impactful organizations in entertainment," Goodell said. "The NFL and Roc Nation share a vision of inspiring meaningful social change across our country. We are thrilled to partner with Roc Nation and look forward to making a difference in our communities together."

In 2016, Sportradar signed a six-year, $250 million deal to distribute NBA data overseas in many of the same ways.

NFL Has Become More Tolerant Of Marijuana Use

Aug 12, 2019 10:16 AM

The NFL has reportedly taken a less strict stance on recreational drugs over the past few years, which could allow a player like Josh Gordon to return to the league.

"It’s really on Josh to convince them that he is going to abide by the drug rules," writes Jay Glazer. "The NFL has changed their tune — they’re no longer trying to ban guys from the NFL for these recreational drugs, especially marijuana. They realize that a lot of them are using it for mental health and for anxiety issues. They’re not trying to be like they used to be, which was zero-tolerance; they’re trying to be more understanding these days, but this is on Josh Gordon to say, 'This is what I’ve done for my recovery, I’m clean and sober, this is how I plan on staying clean and sober, I deserve this chance.' He’s got to convince them, not the other way around."

The NFL and NFLPA are meeting again on Tuesday.

The two sides also met on Monday in Chicago.

It is not yet clear how much progress has been made in the talks, but it is encouraging that they have yet to encounter a roadblock that would lead them to break off talks.

The current CBA will expire after the 2020 season.
