Report: Chargers 'As Good As Gone' For Los Angeles

Dec 18, 2016 10:49 PM

The San Diego Chargers may be forced to relocate to Los Angeles as they're close to exhausting all options in their current market.

"He doesn't have a choice from an economic standpoint, and he knows it," said one ownership source with another club with strong ties to Spanos. "He's as good as gone. He basically told us that he has no choice."

The Chargers have been in San Diego since 1961 but Spanos reportedly "has every intention" of moving the team.

If the Chargers move to Los Angeles, they will share a new stadium in Inglewood with the Rams.

NFL TV Ratings Rebound Following Election

Dec 16, 2016 5:39 PM

While NFL ratings were down to begin the 2016 season, they have rebounded since the United States' elections on November 8th.

While viewership is down 10 percent overall through the first 14 weeks of the season compared to that time span in 2015, that's four percentage points better than the collective broadcasts were down a little more than a month ago.

"It's an encouraging rebound," NFL commissioner Roger Goodell told ESPN on Friday. "I think it proves that the election was certainly a factor."

During Weeks 10-14, NFL games averaged 18.1 million viewers, off just 2 percent compared to those weeks in 2015.

Addressing those who say the decline in ratings is a product of too much football, Goodell says he doesn't see an issue with the quantity of games, including Thursday Night Football.

"I don't think we've seen anyone who wants less football," said Goodell, referencing the recent Dallas Cowboys-Minnesota Vikings game as the most watched Thursday Night Game ever.

Mark Davis, Sheldon Adelson Struggling To Reach Final Vegas Deal

Dec 12, 2016 12:03 PM

Mark Davis and Sheldon Adelson continue to negotiate a deal for a stadium in Las Vegas for the Raiders that would include $750 million in taxpayer money.

The past two weeks have been particularly difficult for Davis and Adelson.

Adelson has a reputation for driving hard bargains and he is expected to push for partial ownership of the Raiders and a path to control the franchise.

Davis still hasn't dismissed a proposal that could keep the Raiders in Oakland, perhaps as leverage against Adelson in their negotiations.

Supreme Court Rejects Challenges To NFL's $1B Concussion Settlement

Dec 12, 2016 11:28 AM

The Supreme Court has rejected challenges to the estimated $1 billion plan by the NFL to settle thousands of concussion lawsuits filed by former players.

The court's action Monday clears the way for payouts to begin to former players who have been diagnosed brain injuries linked to repeated concussions.

The settlement covers more than 20,000 NFL retirees for the next 65 years. The league estimates that 6,000 former players, or nearly three in 10, could develop Alzheimer's disease or moderate dementia.

Players could receive up to $5 million each in the case of severe brain trauma.

Some former players and relatives of players who have died objected to the settlement.

Chargers Expected To Exercise Option For Los Angeles Relocation

Dec 1, 2016 11:21 PM

The San Diego Chargers are expected to exercise the team's option to move to Los Angeles in 2017.

During the NFL owners meetings in January, in which the league approved the relocation of the Rams to Los Angeles, the Chargers were granted the option to relocate to L.A. with a deadline of Jan. 15, 2017.

The Chargers received only 43 percent approval on Measure C in November, the team's $1.8 billion plan that proposed raising hotel taxes from 12.5 percent to 16.5 percent to secure $1.15 billion in bonds to help pay for the stadium project.

"Dean has said that he wants everyone to be able to focus on the remainder of the Chargers' season, and so won't be making any final decisions until after the season is over," said Mark Fabiani, the point person on the stadium situation for the Chargers. "That hasn't changed."
