Attorney's Office Discredits Adam Schefter's 'Biggest Name' Report

Feb 26, 2019 8:23 AM

Mike Edmondson, a spokesman for the state attorney’s office in Palm Beach County, was asked about a report from ESPN's Adam Schefter indicating he'd been “told that Robert Kraft is not the biggest name involved down there in South Florida.” Edmondson responded: “Nobody around here has any idea what [Schefter] is referring to.”

Kraft has been charged on two counts of first-degree solicitation.

NFL Settles Collusion Lawsuit With Colin Kaepernick, Eric Reid

Feb 15, 2019 5:13 PM

Colin Kaepernick and Eric Reid have reached a settlement deal with the NFL over their collusion grievances.

"For the past several months, counsel for Mr. Kaepernick and Mr. Reid have engaged in an ongoing dialogue with representatives of the NFL," attorney Mark Geragos and the NFL said in a joint statement issued Friday. "As a result of those discussions, the parties have decided to resolve the pending grievances. The resolution of this matter is subject to a confidentiality agreement so there will be no further comment by any party."

Kaepernick drew national attention in 2016 when he knelt during the national anthem before games to protest social injustice.

Kaepernick and Reid faced a difficult challenge to meet the burden of proof for collusion as defined in the league's CBA. The statute makes clear that unemployment alone does not mean collusion occurred.

According to the CBA: "The failure by a club or clubs to negotiate, to submit offer sheets, or to sign contracts with restricted free agents or transition players, or to negotiate, make offers, or sign contracts for the playing services of such players or unrestricted free agents, shall not, by itself or in combination only with evidence about the playing skills of the player(s) not receiving any such offer or contract, satisfy the burden of proof set forth ...."

To prove collusion, according to the CBA, Kaepernick and Reid would have had to show that a "club, its employees or agents" had "entered into an agreement" to restrict or limit whether to offer them a contract.

CBS Pushing To Extend Current TV Contract With NFL

Feb 15, 2019 5:11 PM

CBS is pushing to extend their current deal with the NFL.

Their current contract runs through the 2022 season.

CBS has been “very good for the NFL,” said Sean McManus, chairman of CBS Sports.

“I think they love the reach of broadcast,” said Joseph Ianniello, CBS’s president and acting chief executive, of whether NFL might take a major package of games off broadcast television. “I don’t think you ever want to cut off your core audience.”

Ratings this season were up 5 percent for the NFL.

Ratings For Super Bowl Down To Lowest Mark Since 2009

Feb 4, 2019 5:22 PM

Ratings for Super Bowl XLIII between the New England Patriots and Atlanta Falcons were the lowest since 2009 when the Pittsburgh Steelers defeated the Arizona Cardinals.

The game earned a 44.9 overnight rating compared to 47.7 for last year's game between the Patriots and Philadelphia Eagles.

The ratings loss ran counter to the gains the NFL made up during the season.

Both the 2017 and 2018 Super Bowls suffered modest overnight ratings declines from the previous Super Bowl, but nothing compared to the major viewership declines the N.F.L. suffered during both of those regular seasons.

The Super Bowl earned a 26.1 rating in New Orleans; last year’s Super Bowl earned a 53.0.
