Holmgren Shaky About Future

Oct 24, 2014 2:16 AM

Still smarting a bit from his team's Super Bowl XL loss two months ago, a defeat he clearly feels was affected by some dubious officiating, Seattle Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren left open the possibility the 2006 season could be his last in the league. Holmgren, 57, is entering the final season of the eight-year contract he signed in 1999. And while owner Paul Allen indicated in the days preceding the Super Bowl that he wanted to discuss an extension with Holmgren, the future has not been determined. "Right now I'm kind of thinking about what I want to do, honestly," said Holmgren, here for the annual league meetings. "I told [team president] Tim Ruskell that I'm not going to leave anybody hanging out to dry. As soon as I have made a decision, then he will know. And then at the same time the last thing in the whole world I want it to be is a distraction for the team next year. And it shouldn't be."

A report in the Detroit News said the Bengals, Seattle Seahawks and Kansas City Chiefs have all shown interest in Lions quarterback Joey Harrington. Harrington, the No. 3 overall pick in the 2002 draft, will not return to Detroit in 2006. The Lions have signed former Bengal Jon Kitna and former Arizona Cardinal Josh McCown to compete for the starting spot next season.

Burleson Signs With Seattle

Jul 3, 2014 2:24 AM

The Seattle Seahawks signed Vikings receiver Nate Burleson to an offer sheet Friday for a seven-year contract worth up to $49 million, including $5.25 million guaranteed. Burleson caught 30 passes for 328 yards and one touchdown last season while bothered by multiple injuries. It was a disappointing season for Burleson, who had 1,006 yards receiving and nine touchdowns in 2004 and was expected to become the top target with Randy Moss traded to Oakland.

Burleson Gets Contract Offer From Seattle

Sep 25, 2014 4:14 AM

The Seahawks fired back at the Minnesota Vikings on Friday with an enormous ? and not coincidentally familiar ? contract offer for wide receiver Nate Burleson, a restricted free agent. Sources close to the situation confirmed that Burleson's entire deal would be guaranteed if he plays five games in the state of Minnesota during any one year of the deal. Another unrealistic provision is that if Burleson is paid more per year than all of the team's running backs combined in 2006, all of the deal is guaranteed.

Seahawks Boost Defense With Julian Peterson

Jun 9, 2014 10:16 PM

The Seattle Seahawks have agreed on the parameters of a new contract with San Francisco 49ers free agent linebacker Julian Peterson. Peterson's agent, Kevin Poston, said Tuesday evening the contract is for $54 million over seven years and includes $18.5 million guaranteed. The deal is worth $10 million in the first year, $18.4 million in the second and $23.5 million in the third. The Seahawks had no comment. A spokesman with the 49ers, who had been hoping to keep Peterson, said the team has been informed a framework for a contract with Seattle is in place.

Hutchinson Gone, Peterson In?

Dec 13, 2014 5:48 AM

The Seahawks decided Monday not to match the seven-year, $49 million offer sheet on Steve Hutchinson, allowing the All-Pro guard to go to the Minnesota Vikings. The seven-day deadline to match the Vikings' seven-year, $49 million offer sheet expired at midnight ET Monday. The Seahawks did not notify Hutchinson, the Vikings or his agent, Tom Condon, that they were going to match the offer. By letting the deadline pass, Hutchinson became property of the Vikings. As the deadline came and went, the Seahawks added a big-time piece to their defense by reaching a contract agreement with former 49ers linebacker Julian Peterson, one of the premier players still in the unrestricted free agent market. The seven-year agreement, if completed, is expected to total more than what the Vikings offered Hutchinson. It will pay Peterson, the No. 4 player overall in ESPN.com's free agent rankings, as much as $55 million over seven seasons, and includes $18.5 million in bonuses. It is not known if the acquisition of Peterson will take the Seahawks out of the running for Jets defensive end John Abraham. The Seahawks are locked with Atlanta in a tug-of-war over the three-time Pro Bowl end; they have agreed with the Jets on trade compensation, but they have been unable to strike a contract agreement with Abraham, whose preference is to play for the Falcons.

Seahawks Manage To Retain Hutchinson

Feb 7, 2014 12:30 PM

The Seattle Seahawks have apparently maneuvered themselves into position to keep All-Pro guard Steve Hutchinson, an attorney for the NFL's players' union said Monday. Hutchinson's contract was the subject of a hearing in Philadelphia where a special master was to decide how much of the Minnesota Vikings' offer the Seahawks must match to keep Hutchinson, considered a key to Seattle's run to the Super Bowl this year.
