Dan Campbell On Hype Around Lions: Have To 'Earn It'

Jul 24, 2023 8:42 AM

The Detroit Lions enter the 2023 season with a lot of hype, something Dan Campbell says the team has to earn.

"I think as always, the thing that's gonna worry you is the hype train," Campbell said. "I mean, as with most coaches, this thing is just taking off and it's out of control right now and that's fine, as long as we stay focused on the job at hand and the work. I just keep going back to that. We've got to put the work in and earn it."

The Lions haven't made the playoffs since 2016, but they are the favorite in the NFC North after winning eight of their final 10 games in 2022.

Lions View Jahmyr Gibbs As 'Positionless' Like Christian McCaffrey

Jul 13, 2023 1:41 PM

The Detroit Lions have compared Jahmyr Gibbs in how he is a positionless running back similar to Christian McCaffrey. The Lions used the 12th overall pick on Gibbs.

GM Brad Holmes told Peter Schrager he views Gibbs as a "multi-phase, elite, explosive, positionless weapon."

The GM mentioned Gibbs could have the same impact on the Lions' offense as two of the greatest dual-threat backs in NFL history.

"When I first got with the Rams in 2003, Marshall Faulk was still there, and I was a huge Marshall Faulk guy -- just kind of seeing what he does in both phases," Holmes said. "And just from a scouting standpoint, when Christian McCaffrey came out, he was the last guy that I was like, 'Holy cow, this guy can run routes like a slot receiver but also run it.' So, you start getting reminders of those players. I'm not sitting here saying Jahmyr Gibbs is those players, but (he's) just a special weapon like that. We have a lot of excitement and optimism."

Amon-Ra St. Brown Still Keeps Notebook Of 16 WRs Drafted Before Him

Jul 12, 2023 9:36 AM

Amon-Ra St. Brown hasn't forgotten the 16 wide receivers that were drafted ahead of him in the 2021 NFL Draft.

After totaling 90 catches as a rookie, St. Brown had 106 receptions for 1,161 yards and six touchdowns in 2022 on his way to a Pro Bowl nod.

"I actually still think about it," he admitted on Monday's NFL Total Access. "I actually have my goals written down in my notebook. What I want to achieve every year. So, what I want to achieve this year going into the season, my personal goals, and then right below that I have the 16 receivers written down, where they went to college right below that. And so, I read that whole list three times before I go to practice every day. It's something I'll never forget. Something I make sure I'm always reminded of."
