Amon-Ra St. Brown Hopes To Become Deep Threat For Lions

Jun 21, 2023 8:46 AM

Amon-Ra St. Brown hopes to become more of a deep threat for the Detroit Lions this coming season.

Detroit receivers coach Antwaan Randle El believes it can happen.

"He can get in and out of cuts so easily, like he doesn't have to give all that extra stuff cause he can just get out of it so fast," Randle El said. "So I just want [him] to just run that smooth route. Like, you don't have to give any extra at the top of it, just, pop-pop, come on out of it and he's been doing it in OTAs so that's been a growth for him. So no extra movement, just get in the route, come out of it because he gets in the route so fast."

St. Brown has a career average of 10.6 yards per catch, a number that increased last season largely due to yards after catch.

Darius Slay: Reunion With Matt Patricia Has Been 'Cordial'

Jun 13, 2023 8:18 AM

Darius Slay has addressed his relationship with Matt Patricia, who the Philadelphia Eagles hired this offseason as a senior defensive assistant.

The Detroit Lions traded Slay to the Eagles in March 2020 after his relationship with Patricia, then the Lions head coach, fell apart.

During an appearance at a charity golf tournament with Calvin Johnson on Monday, Slay said that things have been "cordial" between the two men since Patricia’s arrival in Philadelphia.

"It's another day at the office," Slay said. "We both got the same goal, just going out there to compete and win a championship, so that's the main focus."

Calvin Johnson's Relationship With Lions Has Improved

Jun 12, 2023 9:30 AM

Calvin Johnson hosted a high school football camp in partnership with the Detroit Lions this past weekend.

Johnson's connection with the Lions has been trending up lately as the franchise tries to repair its relationship with him.

The Hall of Fame wide receiver was also spotted on the sidelines during an OTA session in late May in addition to returning for the last day of mandatory minicamp Thursday.

Johnson credits Lions COO Mike Disner for helping mend the relationship, although he says there's still work to be done.

"I always say Mike Disner's been a huge part of bringing this thing back together with the team," Johnson said. "So I'm appreciative of them, appreciative of the whole organization allowing me to have it here and collabing with me in doing that because it's a heck of an experience for these kids."

Johnson's relationship soured in Detroit after being forced to pay back a little more than $1 million to the Lions upon his retirement after the 2015 season. However, he has been around the team facility more than usual this offseason.

Dan Campbell: Jared Goff 'Better' QB Than When He Was With Rams

Jun 7, 2023 8:22 AM

Dan Campbell says Jared Goff has been better with the Detroit Lions than he was during his tenure with the Los Angeles Rams.

Goff led the Rams to a Super Bowl appearance in 2018.

"He hung in there, and I think what you're seeing is a guy who just put his head down and worked on what he could, tried to improve on what he could, and now his confidence is really, it has grown, and along the way, he's matured as a quarterback," Campbell said. "I mean, he's a better quarterback than he was there, in my opinion, because he can do more things. He's mentally on it.

"We've come light-years ahead of where he was two years ago. He's got a real good grasp of what we're doing, where the issues are, where the problems are, and that's something that we really wanted him to get good at and he wanted to get good at, and he's worked at it, and he's improved."

Goff is entering his third year with the Lions, having come over as part of the Matthew Stafford trade.

"I think we all understand that we're not going to just show up and win because we were good for the last 10 games last year. There is no reason for that," Goff said. "If anything, it's gonna be harder, teams are gonna give us a better shot this year and we have to be prepared and have to approach it that way."
