Washington Places Alex Smith On PUP List

Jul 27, 2020 9:33 PM

Washington has placed Alex Smith on the physically unable to perform list.

Smith has not yet been cleared by the team for football activity.

In putting him on PUP before camp starts, Washington can take time to fully evaluate Smith.

Smith suffered a broken fibula and tibia in his right leg in November 2018 and required 17 surgeries.

Smith's contract runs through the 2022 season. If Washington releases him this year, it would count as a combined $20 million against the cap over the next two seasons, assuming that the team collects on the $12 million insurance policy that would provide cap relief.

Alex Smith Cleared To Return To Full Football Activity

Jul 25, 2020 8:27 AM

Alex Smith has received clearance from his surgical team to return to full football activity.

Smith suffered a devastating tibia and fibula fracture in 2018.

Smith and his family spent the past few months in Hawaii, where he continued to train and prepare for the coming season.

"Everyone was in agreement that my bone was in a really good place," Smith told ESPN on Friday. "I had healed a lot. They said that given the combination of the rod and where I was with the healing process, I had zero limitations and could even resume some football activities.

"To hear them say that, from a life standpoint, they wouldn't restrict me from doing anything -- I could go skiing or snowboarding tomorrow if I wanted -- then on top of that, to get the green light that I could practice, get contact, that I had healed up, that much was pretty wild to hear. I didn't know if I would ever hear those words."

Smith's contract runs through 2022.

'Washington Football Team' Will Be Temporary Name For 2020

Jul 23, 2020 1:14 PM

Washington will call itself the "Washington Football Team" pending the adoption of a new name.

Washington will not have any change to its color scheme. It will still use burgundy and gold, and the logo on the helmet will be replaced by the player's number in gold.

Fans will be able to purchase "Washington Football Team" merchandise from Fanatics and NFL Shop in the coming days.

Dan Snyder had defiantly resisted changing the team's name for years and told the USA Today in 2013 to "put it in all caps" that he would never make such a move.

A letter signed by 87 investors and shareholders who hold a total worth of $620 billion was sent to sponsors FedEx, PepsiCo and Nike, asking them to stop doing business with the team unless the name changed.

Fritz Pollard Alliance Skeptical Of Snyder's Process For New Hires

Jul 23, 2020 8:55 AM

The Fritz Pollard Alliance will formally request that the NFL investigate whether the Washington franchise adhered to the latest iteration of the Rooney Rule in its hiring of two high-ranking executives earlier this week.

The Fritz Pollard Alliance is an independent group that advises the NFL on matters of diversity and inclusion.

The group has questions about the hiring processes that resulted in Washington adding two officials in key roles, specifically the hiring of Terry Bateman and Julie Donaldson.

Under the most recent expansion of the Rooney Rule approved by owners May 19, clubs and the league office are required to interview "minorities and/or female applicants" for positions such as team president and "senior executives in communications, finance, human resources, legal, football operations, sales, marketing, sponsorship, information technology and security positions."

Mark Cuban To Daniel Snyder: Accept Your Mistakes

Jul 20, 2020 8:56 AM

Mark Cuban has publicly issued some advice to Daniel Snyder: Accept your mistakes.

In response to a Washington Post report in which 15 women made allegations of sexual harassment and a toxic workplace culture within the NFL's Washington franchise from 2006 to 2019, Cuban made a public call for Snyder and his top staffers to show accountability for what has happened.

"If you know Dan Snyder, if you're involved with the Redskins, if you connect to them, tell Dan and tell his senior management you've got to just recognize what you did right and what you did wrong," Cuban said on SiriusXM Radio show. "You have to accept the mistakes you made. That's painful. I made a lot of mistakes. And that's the only way this is going to get resolved."

Cuban issued public apologies and agreed to contribute $10 million to women's organizations in February 2018 after Sports Illustrated reported on "a corporate culture rife with misogyny and predatory sexual behavior" that spanned decades in the Dallas Mavericks' organization, including allegations against former CEO and president Terdema Ussery, who left the team in 2015.

15 Women Sexually Harassed While Working For Washington

Jul 17, 2020 3:30 PM

A report from the Washington Post cited 15 different women who say they were sexually harassed while working for the Washington NFL team.

The report indicates “they cried about the realization their dream job of working in the NFL came with what they characterized as relentless sexual harassment and verbal abuse that was ignored — and in some cases, condoned — by top team executives.”

Among the employees accused of sexual harassment is Larry Michael, the team’s radio announcer, who abruptly announced this week that he was leaving the team.

Also named in the article are two employees who were recently fired, director of pro personnel Alex Santos and assistant director of pro personnel Richard Mann II.

Daniel Snyder declined to be interviewed for the report. Snyder could receive pressure to sell the franchise as they also go through a rebranding of their long offensive nickname.

From Jason La Canfora of CBS, who once worked the Washington beat for the Washington Post: “The warped and toxic culture of the Washington Football Team is about to be exposed in a sickening fashion . . . Again.”

Washington Announces Plan To Remove Nickname, Logo

Jul 13, 2020 10:34 AM

Washington will be retiring their nickname and logo after completing a thorough review that began on July 3. The nickname had long been controversial, but Dan Snyder previously took a strong stance against ever removing it.

"Today, we are announcing we will be retiring the (nick)name and logo upon completion of this review," the team said in a statement.

"Dan Snyder and Coach [Ron] Rivera are working closely to develop a new name and design approach that will enhance the standing of our proud, tradition-rich franchise and inspire our sponsors, fans and community for the next 100 years."

Sports Business Daily reported that the announcement of the new name has been delayed because trademark issues are pending.

"The NFL and Dan Snyder have finally made the right call and Change the Mascot commends them for it," Ray Halbritter, Oneida Nation Representative and head of the Change the Mascot campaign said in a statement Monday. "This is a good decision for the country -- not just Native peoples -- since it closes a painful chapter of denigration and disrespect toward Native Americans and other people of color. Future generations of Native youth will no longer be subjected to this offensive and harmful slur every Sunday during football season.

"We have made clear from the start that this movement was never about political correctness, but seeking to prevent unnecessary harm to our youth, since we know from social scientists the many harmful effects this mascot has had on Native Americans' self-image. Today marks the start of a new chapter for the NFL and the Washington franchise, beginning a new legacy that can be more inclusive for fans of all backgrounds."

During that time, a letter signed by 87 investors and shareholders with a total worth of $620 billion was sent to sponsors FedEx, PepsiCo and Nike, asking them to stop doing business with the team unless the name was changed.

Snyder mentioned sponsors ahead of fans twice in the statement released by Washington.
