Tom Brady Sold Buccaneers On His Fit For Them

Mar 31, 2020 11:37 AM

Jason Licht revealed that Tom Brady actually sold the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on his fit with the team rather than the other way around.

"We had a great conversation -- Bruce (Arians) and I -- we talked to him for over an hour and a half. And he made it clear in the conversation that he was very, very interested," Licht said. "It was almost like a recruitment on his part, telling us why it would make sense for him to come to Tampa Bay. The next call we made, we signed him, but it was at that phone call that we realized, that we felt like we had him."

The Buccaneers went into the offseason targeting Brady believing he has plenty of good football left.

"The tape showed to us that he had plenty of arm. In fact, we thought that he had an ideal arm for Bruce in his system," Licht said, referring to Arians' affinity for taking shots downfield. "He can still throw it deep. We felt like the mobility was still the same as he's always had, which, he's never been able to outrun anybody. But he certainly is good in the pocket in terms of eluding pressure and with his poise and his instincts. We did not see a decline in his arm talent whatsoever. And, in fact, we feel like he could still play for over two years for us, and hopefully that's the case."

Joe Montana: Patriots 'Made Mistake' Letting Tom Brady Go

Mar 27, 2020 9:00 AM

Joe Montana doesn't think the New England Patriots should have let Tom Brady get away.

"I don't know what's going on inside there, but somebody made a mistake," Montana told USA Today.

Montana finished his career with the Kansas City Chiefs after 14 seasons and four Super Bowl victories with the San Francisco 49ers.

He didn't have a choice, unlike Brady, who signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in free agency.

"I had a different story, where they had made a decision. He, obviously, they never would have gotten rid of. I still don't understand how New England let him get away. I don't understand that," Montana said.

Bruce Arians: Tom Brady Can Still Throw Deep Ball

Mar 26, 2020 8:03 AM

Bruce Arians believes that Tom Brady, his new quarterback with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, can still throw deep at age 42.

"I think the perception is just wrong," Arians said. "I thought his deep ball was outstanding last year. Through their play-action game, they hit a lot of deep balls. And our quarterback -- I thought he put it as good as anybody -- throw it to the guy who's open."

The coach also said people misunderstand Tampa Bay's offense, which is known for attacking the field vertically.

"We do have reads that start deep and come in short, but I've had a couple quarterbacks that just keep looking deep -- they won't throw the checkdown," Arians said. "[Offensive consultant] Tom Moore has the best saying in the world: 'You don't go broke putting money in the bank. Take the damn checkdown.'

"We don't have to teach Tom that. But I think the freedom of looking downfield on certain routes and in certain situations, when the matchup's perfect -- take it, don't be afraid to take it -- some quarterbacks are afraid to take it. I'm not looking for a 'checkdown Charlie' quarterback."

Buccaneers Unlikely To Sign Antonio Brown

Mar 19, 2020 3:42 PM

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are unlikely to sign Antonio Brown.

It has been rumored that Brown would end up signing with whatever team Tom Brady chose to join this offseason due to their friendship and his desire for the best receivers corps possible.

Bruce Arians, however, coached Brown early in his career with the Pittsburgh Steelers and is said to not have enjoyed the experience.

The Buccaneers already have Mike Evans and Chris Godwin at wide receiver.
