The Kansas City Chiefs have acquired cornerback Mike Hughes in a trade with the Minnesota Vikings.

The Chiefs traded a 2022 sixth-round pick to Minnesota while the Vikings sent a 2022 seventh-round pick to Kansas City in the deal.

Hughes was drafted by the Vikings in the first round (30th overall) of the 2018 NFL draft. The Vikings declined to exercise the fifth-year option in Hughes' rookie contract, meaning he will be a free agent after this season.

Rick Spielman is giving Kirk Cousins a vote of confidence heading into the 2021 season.

The Minnesota Vikings drafted quarterback Kellen Mond in the third-round of this year's NFL Draft.

"I spoke to him [the morning after the pick] and talked to his agent and just let him know that we want to make sure we have competition behind him, that there's no doubt that Kirk's our quarterback going forward, and that we want to create competition to see who's going to be the backup," Spielman said.

"Kirk was great. He understands. He knows he's our guy, his agent knows he's our guy. Right now, we're just focusing on getting ready for this season coming up."
