49ers Trade A.J. Jenkins To Chiefs For Jonathan Baldwin

Sep 15, 2014 3:23 AM

The San Francisco 49ers have trade A.J. Jenkins to the Kansas City Chiefs for Jonathan Baldwin.

Jenkins was the 30th overall pick by the 49ers in the 2012 NFL Draft out of Illinois.

Jenkins has struggled at wide receiver for the 49ers in both practice and in preseason play.

Like Jenkins, Baldwin is a former first round pick that has struggled.

Alex Smith Would Have Looked Upon 49ers With Regret Without Harbaugh

Dec 7, 2014 6:36 AM

Because Alex Smith had one and a half productive seasons as the starting quarterback of the San Francisco 49ers, he can look back upon his tenure there positively.

Smith struggled through injuries and frequent changes to his coaching staff until the arrival of Jim Harbaugh in 2011.

"If I'd left two years ago before Harbaugh got there, I would've held onto a little more, regret or bitterness about what had happened," Smith said.

Smith is now the starting quarterback of the Kansas City Chiefs.

Andy Reid had long been an admirer of Smith.

"I met him (Reid) through the draft process, and it seemed like through the first eight years, we played the Eagles eight times or something like that (actually, six times)," Smith said. "I saw a lot of the Eagles that way. I'd heard little rumors here and there, but you never know what's true and what's not."

Smith and Harbaugh still communicate on occasion.

"I think for me, it was a posititive," he said. "I'm not lying -- not b.s.ing. No question, I went through some different things, but it all led to me where I am today."

Reid Attempted To Trade For Alex Smith Several Times With Eagles

Sep 16, 2014 2:47 AM

Andy Reid attempted to trade for Alex Smith on multiple occasions while he was with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Smith struggled early in his career with the San Francisco 49ers amid a revolving door of offensive coordinators, but Reid continued to believe in his potential. Reid was always impressed by Smith's intelligence and how he showed improvement whenever he watched him on film.

Reid was able to acquire Smith from the 49ers this offseason.

“It’s a good fresh start for him,” Reid said of Smith. “He loves to play, and he’s tough.”

Chiefs' OC: Alex Smith Is NFL's Best Quarterback

Nov 23, 2014 4:40 PM

The Kansas City Chiefs acquired Alex Smith in the offseason in exchange for a second-round pick in 2013 and either a second- or third-round pick in 2014.

Smith helped lead the San Francisco 49ers to the NFC Championship Game in 2011.

“Ultimately, every team has to have a quarterback,” offensive coordinator Chuck Pederson said. “I think we have the best in the league."

Pederson was asked if he thinks Smith is better than the likes of Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers.

“There are a lot of great ones,” Pederson said, “but over time, Alex has proven he can get it done. He’s a sharp guy, he brings a wealth of knowledge, he’s experienced, he’s a proven winner the last couple of years, and he needs a team to embrace him.”

Smith had a 104.1 passer rating before losing his starting job last season to Colin Kaepernick.
