Ben, Ward And Taylor Both Sit Steelers/Jaguars Game

Oct 1, 2014 10:20 AM

Injuries will keep Pittsburgh wide receiver Hines Ward and Jacksonville running back Fred Taylor out of the Jaguars-Steelers game. Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, who hyperextended his left knee Oct. 10 in a victory at San Diego, can be used only as an emergency No. 3 quarterback. Tommy Maddox is scheduled to make his first NFL start since the regular season finale at Buffalo on Jan. 2. Ward, who aggravated his hamstring, will miss his first game in 116 consecutive regular-season games. Antwaan Randle El and Cedrick Wilson are scheduled to start.

Maddox Upgraded As Probable Starter For Sunday

Oct 1, 2014 10:24 AM

The Pittsburgh Steelers upgraded backup quarterback Tommy Maddox from questionable to probable after Thursday's practice. By Sunday afternoon, the nine-year veteran, who has recovered remarkably quickly from a calf injury, could be upgraded to starter. With starter Ben Roethlisberger still slowed by a knee injury suffered late in the Monday night victory at San Diego, and unable to practice for a second straight day, the Steelers are strongly leaning toward starting Maddox against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday at Heinz Field, sources confirmed to ESPN.com.

Niners Deal Winborn To Jaguars

Oct 1, 2014 10:22 AM

The San Francisco 49ers on Thursday agreed to a trade that will send former starting linebacker Jamie Winborn, estranged from the team for the past week, to the Jacksonville Jaguars, ESPN.com confirmed. The deal is contingent upon Winborn, 26, passing a physical examination. The fifth-year veteran arrived in Jacksonville late Thursday night and the physical will be administered on Friday morning. Terms of the trade were not yet available, but it is believed the 49ers will receive a 2006 draft choice. "It's exciting," Winborn said when reached on his cell phone. "It's a new start for me."
