"I'll confirm that we've agreed on a multi-year contract extension but, beyond that, we've been consistent all along that we’re not going to comment on his contract," Lewand said.

Burleson Fine With Helping Young Take His Job

Oct 31, 2014 8:06 AM

Nate Burleson says he's fine with mentoring young wide receiver Titus Young, who could eventually take his job in Detroit. Burleson was helped out by Marcus Robinson when both were with the Vikings and he now plans to pay that help forward to Young. "I told Titus, I said, 'Look. There's no question that you're brought here to take my position," the veteran said. "That's what you're brought here to do. And by the time I'm done, you should be ready to take that and you should be on your way to a new contract. And if you're not in those two positions, I don't think I did my job well enough.'"

The Lions' offseason has been marred by off-field trouble, but Cliff Avril said Wednesday it's unfair to label his team as troublemakers. "You can't label us by a few young guys getting in trouble," Avril said in an interview Wednesday with "NFL32" on ESPN.

Aaron Berry Arrested On Suspicion Of DUI

Oct 31, 2014 8:02 AM

Lions cornerback Aaron Berry was arrested early Saturday morning in Harrisburg, Pa., on suspicion of driving under the influence. "I want to offer a sincere apology to the Lions organization, Lions fans, the coaches and all my teammates for my actions this past weekend," Berry said in a statement on his agency's Facebook page. "This is not the example I want to set for young people and it's certainly not what my team and coaches expect from me. I promise to do everything in my power to make sure this never happens again. I understand these are just words and it will be my future actions that ultimately will speak for me." At one stage earlier this month, the Lions accounted for five of the 21 player arrests in the NFL this offseason.

Alphonso Smith Doesn't Care About Trade Talk

Jun 14, 2014 11:04 PM

Alphonso Smith doesn't care if the Lions are trying to trade him and says he won't care until they actually the pull the trigger on a deal. Smith, selected by the Broncos in the second round of the 2009 draft after Denver shipped a 2010 first-rounder to Seattle, was sent to Detroit after only one season. "Please forgive my frankness," Smith told Dave Dye of FOXSportsDetroit.com. "To be blunt with you, I really didn't care. It didn't happen. It still may happen. You never know. "I don't care about reports or rumors. Only thing I can focus on is I'm a Detroit Lion and I'm a Detroit Lion until I'm not."

Burleson: Johnson Reported 'Stronger, Faster'

Oct 4, 2014 6:46 PM

Calvin Johnson had 96 catches for 1,681 yards last season, but one of his teammates says he has reported to the Lions even better this month. "I know it sounds corny," fellow wide receiver Nate Burleson said. "You wouldn't think a guy like that could come back and get better, but he does." Johnson received a huge contract with Detroit this offseason. Burleson said Johnson looked "stronger and faster" this spring and should put up more eye-popping numbers come fall. "That's pretty much all that counts," Burleson said. "He probably dropped a little bit of weight, so he's in extremely good shape. I see him in the weight room, so I know he's stronger. And on the field he's yards ahead of us in conditioning drills; he's still running past guys easily."

Avril Believes Detroit's Reputation Is Unfair

Oct 3, 2014 5:36 AM

Coming off their first playoff appearance in years, the Lions aren't getting a lot of respect because of their poor reputation. "Detroit is so young, they don't have the vets to tell the young guys to knock it off," a NFC personnel executive said last month. "In Pittsburgh or Baltimore, they can take guys, because there, in those places, they can't act up. They're put in that brotherhood, and they know if they do it, Ray Lewis is gonna come after their ass. When you're young and stupid, and there's no leadership, it can be a problem." They are perceived as an undisciplined team with the capability of self-implosion. "It's not right. It's unfair that you would put the whole thing on the team," said defensive end Cliff Avril, who is still looking for a new contract. "The guys that have gotten in trouble are fairly young. It's a learning curve for these guys, understanding that you can't do these things because it affects not only your teammates but your family, and so on. I think once the guys get an understanding (of) how this thing is run, they'll be all right. But it's not fair to make it a reflection of the whole team."

Cunningham Wishes He Had Helped Fairley

Oct 2, 2014 2:49 AM

Lions defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham looks at Nick Fairley and regrets not stepping in before the talented defensive tackle got himself in trouble with a pair of offseason arrests. "The disappointment that I have is that I bogged myself down in so much paperwork that I didn't see that coming," Cunningham told the Detroit Free Press. "And I should have seen it. With my experience, I should have understood." He's been in the NFL in 19 of the past 20 seasons, and he's come across men in that time who were far worse off than Fairley. "I'll give you one example, Dan Saleaumua," Cunningham said, referring to the Lions' seventh-round pick in 1987 who resurrected his career in Kansas City. "(The Lions) threw him out. He went to the Pro Bowl for me. Now he has a chain of, I think, 55 drug stores ... and he runs them like a football team, and he's worth a lot of money. We didn't give up on him."
