Suh Requests Meeting With Goodell To Discuss Fines

Sep 20, 2014 12:29 PM

Ndamukong Suh is scheduled to meet with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell this week to discuss fines he has received from the league this season. Fox Sports reporter Jay Glazer reported that Suh is looking for an explanation of what he's doing wrong while also pleading his case why he shouldn't be receiving fines. The meeting also will include Merton Hanks, who's in charge of handing out fines for the league. Suh has been fined $42,500 in his 1 1/2 seasons in the NFL.

Lions Unfazed By 'Dirty Play' Reputation

Jun 24, 2014 5:39 PM

Lions defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham used an interesting motivational tool with his group during a team meeting on Friday. "Coach showed us something today," linebacker Stephen Tulloch said. "It was funny. It was on NFL Network, on the Web site. It said 'good versus evil' and they had (Tim) Tebow and they had (Ndamukong) Suh on the front cover. "I guess evil's coming to town, and we're ready to put some work in. We're looking forward to it. Obviously, the media has kind of looked at the team as a 'dirty team' at some point. But that's not the way we play. We're just a physical team that loves to go out there and play hard." Suh and the defense have been branded as dirty for their hard-nosed play, but coaches and players responded to the suggestion that they are evil by rolling their eyes and smiling. "I don't know if that was appropriate," coach Jim Schwartz said, then paused to add his only other thought on the subject. "I'll take the Ernest Hemingway economy of words right there."

Bailey: It Takes A Team Effort To Defend Calvin Johnson

Jul 11, 2014 8:47 PM

Broncos cornerback Champ Bailey is a 10-time Pro Bowler, but he knows he'll have his hands full on Sunday against Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson. The last time the two players faced off, in 2007, Johnson was just a rookie. "Back then, he was a young pup," Bailey said. "He wasn't polished yet, but he's figured that thing out real fast. He has no issues now. He's using everything he has -- size, strength, all his speed. You see all the different parts of his game coming out." Through seven games in 2011, Johnson leads the NFL with 10 touchdowns receptions. He ranks third in receptions and fourth in yards as well. "I think one guy could be successful, but it does take a team effort to defend him all day," Bailey said of defending Johnson. "You can't just match up on him and think it's going to work all day, if he has a good quarterback throwing the ball. There's sometimes when he goes up, nobody can get to that height that he reaches. He's about as tall, strong and unique as they come."

Lions Claim Harris Off Waivers From Bears

Jun 24, 2014 5:19 PM

The Lions have claimed safety Chris Harris off waivers just a day after he was released by the Bears. Chicago, who will play Detroit on Nov. 13, cut Harris just over a week after he requested a trade before the Oct. 18 deadline. If he had cleared waivers, Harris was planning on visiting the Texans, who lost former Bears safety Danieal Manning to a broken fibula.

Stafford Looks Comfortable At Practice

Sep 20, 2014 12:29 PM

Matthew Stafford worked with the first team at practice Thursday, a sign of progress after he hurt his ankle last weekend. "He has improved," coach Jim Schwartz said. "I think that he's on a pretty good track right now." Stafford hurt his right ankle late in Sunday's 23-16 loss to Atlanta, hobbling off the field after a fourth down incompletion, but it was hard to tell how serious the injury was because the Lions never got the ball back after Stafford came off. Detroit plays at Denver this Sunday. Stafford has completed 60 percent of his passes this season, for 1,912 yards with 16 touchdowns and four interceptions.

Stafford Practices, Ankle Feels OK

Oct 16, 2014 10:18 PM

Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford was able to practice Wednesday on his injured right ankle, although backup Shaun Hill took some snaps with the first team. "It feels OK. It's sore obviously, but it's made progress since Sunday," Stafford said. "If I'm healthy enough to play, I'm going to try to be out there. It's yet to be seen if I can get to that point, but if I can, then I want to play." Stafford was hurt toward the end of last weekend's 23-16 loss to the Falcons. Detroit coach Jim Schwartz said Monday he was day to day as the team began preparing for Sunday's game at Denver.

Stafford Will Have X-Rays On Right Leg

Jul 5, 2014 2:57 AM

Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford suffered an apparent right leg injury on the team's final offensive play in Sunday afternoon's loss to the Falcons. Falcons linebacker Curtis Lofton fell on Stafford's right leg during Detroit's last play. Stafford played in only three games last season because of shoulder problems and has missed 19 regular season games over his first two NFL seasons. "I'm moving around OK right now, so we'll see," Stafford said. Stafford said after the game that he wasn't exactly sure which part of his leg was hurt, but told multiple media outlets after the game that he expected to get X-rays on the leg.

Falcons Claim Lions Taunted Injured Ryan

Nov 6, 2014 5:13 PM

Two members of the Falcons accused Lions defensive linemen Ndamukong Suh and Cliff Avril of taunting quarterback Matt Ryan after what initially appeared to be a serious leg injury in Sunday afternoon's game. Atlanta center Todd McClure and receiver Roddy White claim that Suh and Avril prodded and mocked Ryan after Falcons offensive lineman Will Svitek stepped on Ryan's ankle. Ryan went down and immediately grabbed his leg, and according to the Falcons players, Avril kicked the feet of the Atlanta quarterback and mockingly called for trainers to cart Ryan off the field. "I lost a whole lot of respect for 90 [Suh] today, and also 92 [Cliff Avril], the [expletive] they were doing when Matt got hurt," White said. "That was unacceptable. ... Like 92 was kicking [Ryan's] feet, saying, 'Get him off the field.' We don't do stuff like that. ... When you compete, you never want to see a guy get hurt." Ryan eventually walked off under his own power and headed down the tunnel, but returned during the team's next offensive possession. "I had respect for Suh before the game," McClure added. "But when Matt was on the ground, the things [Suh] was saying and the trash he was talking was definitely uncalled for. There are certain things you don't do. [He said], 'Get the cart' and several other things that I can't repeat."

Doctors Believe They Got All Of Harrison's Tumor

Oct 31, 2014 5:15 AM

Jerome Harrison's surgery Friday to remove a brain tumor went well and doctors believe they removed all of the tumor, according to a source. A condition known as arteriovenous malformation, which is an abnormal connection between veins and arteries that often goes undetected, may have been a contributing factor to the tumor. Harrison was placed on the reserve/non-football illness list by the Lions after his trade to the Eagles was voided after the tumor was discovered.

Jerome Harrison Has Surgery For Tumor

Jun 24, 2014 5:50 PM

Lions running back Jerome Harrison had surgery Friday after a brain tumor was discovered during a physical for a trade with the Eagles that was nullified because of the condition. Detroit coach Jim Schwartz, who said that Harrison was placed on the reserve/non-football illness list, visited the player at the hospital. "He was in very good spirits," Schwartz said. "But after that, I don't know if I want to talk too much. It's one of those things, it's a non-football thing, and I'll just let him take it away from that spot."
