Lions Kicker Rayner Mulls Options

Aug 7, 2014 12:12 AM

Lions kicker Dave Rayner will likely be an unrestricted free agent when the NFL lockout is lifted. While Rayner wants to re-sign with Detroit and the Lions hope to bring him to training camp, there's no guarantee he'll have a job if he does. Jason Hanson has two years left on his contract, and while he missed half of last season with a knee injury Hanson is back kicking and has 19 years of history on his side.

McGinest Not Eyeing Return To NFL

Oct 14, 2014 12:11 AM

Despite telling The Detroit Free-Press on Friday that he is interested in a return to the NFL, former Lions and Patriots linebacker Willie McGinest says he plans to remain retired. McGinest had been working for the NFL Network as an analyst before taking part in player-organized workouts with the Lions this past week. He turns 40 in December but has been working hard to get in playing shape and told the paper that he is gauging the interest of teams. "We're going to see if I get offered a contract now," McGinest said. "After I send this tape out to a few teams, we're going to see." On Saturday, McGinest sent the following statement to PFT: "Even though I looked as good as I did, this number 55 has been retired for three years and plans to stay retired. The only thing that will bring me back is a one-day contract with New England to retire as a Patriot."

Suh Not Backing Off 16-0 Claim For Lions

May 25, 2014 6:26 PM

Lions defender Ndamukong Suh says there is no reason why the team can't go 16-0 this coming season. "Like I said before, we can go 16-0," Suh told the Detroit News. "One of the reasons I'm saying this is because we should shoot for the top. And if you don't want to be a Super Bowl team, what are you playing for? If you are satisfied with winning games and just making the playoffs, I think you should expect more. There is more to just playing and trying to win games. That is my mentality and that is my approach. We should come in with the attitude of the sky is the limit and we want to be the best."

McGinest Eyeing Return To NFL

Aug 7, 2014 12:01 AM

Willie McGinest retired three years ago after 15 NFL seasons, but the 39-year-old might be ready to give football another try. "We're going to see if I get offered a contract now," McGinest said after taking part in the Lions' player-organized workout at Birmingham Detroit Country Day on Friday. "After I send this tape out to a few teams, we're going to see." McGinest, a former linebacker, went through a circuit of heavy ropes and kettle bells with almost 30 Lions on their final day of player workouts. "Thank God I was in shape and I was able to do all the stuff," McGinest said. "It was a different type of workout, though. I've never experienced something like this with the Art of Strength. It was less football work, but it was a lot of core conditioning, getting the heart rate up. And talking to (trainer Mike Knight), this is one of those workouts they would implement like one or two days a week out of the other regular stuff you do as a change-up, which was good for me."

Suh Works Out With Lions

Sep 12, 2014 9:18 PM

Ndamukong Suh worked out with some of his teammates during voluntary workouts for the first time on Friday. "It was something I wanted to do and the timing of my schedule worked out so I could at least make one," Suh said. Suh started his offseason by having shoulder surgery that prevented him from playing in the Pro Bowl. He was also among the celebrities who sped out of London last month for the Gumball 3000 Rally, a seven-day car race stretching across 10 countries in Europe. "It's unfortunate that I couldn't make it more (to workouts), but I was traveling back from Europe and I didn't want to be sluggish for the earlier workouts, and I went to Nebraska to take care of my shoulder," Suh said. "My shoulder is doing great."

Detroit's Williams, Johnson Likely Fighting For One Spot

Aug 10, 2014 2:00 AM

Lions wide receiver Derrick Williams and Bryant Johnson are likely fighting for a single roster spot heading into the 2011 season. Detroit wasn't very happy with the production they got from their No. 3 wide receivers last season. "I have confidence in myself, and I'm not worried about some things, making the team or anything like that," Williams said. "I'm worried about, if I get my opportunity, I'm going to show what I can do and work hard. And like I said, when I get the opportunity, just making the most of it. That's in practice, that's when I get out there in the games, when the ball comes my way, make the play." The Lions drafted Titus Young in the second round of April's NFL Draft, which spells the end for one of the two veterans.

Lions Rookies Join Player Workouts

Feb 8, 2014 4:17 PM

The Lions worked out at Detroit Country Day School on Monday, the same place they gathered a few times in May. About 25 players were on hand, including two second-round picks from the team's 2011 draft. Detroit rookie wide receiver Titus Young and running back Mikel Leshoure both attended. "I don't think they overwhelmed us with too much," Leshoure said. "There's no playbooks for me to just go home and study. We're going to take it bit by bit."

Lions Aren't Worried About Suh Skipping Workouts

Oct 30, 2014 4:07 AM

Lions defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh has yet to show up for the team's informal workouts this offseason. Teams have been forced to put together their own workouts due to the NFL's lockout. "Whoever doesn't show up is not going to be looked at as guys who are dodging this or who aren't team players," said center Dominic Raiola. "Everybody is going to be looked at the same. Nobody is going to be like, 'You weren't here, you are a step behind.' Nothing like that. "This is just totally voluntary. They will be here when they are here and they will be in shape."
