Browns' Lewis, Ravens' Ngata Fined $5,000 Each

Oct 15, 2014 11:38 PM

Cleveland Browns' tailback Jamal Lewis and Baltimore Ravens' nose tackle Haloti Ngata have been fined $5,000 each for their actions in last week's game between the two teams. Both incidents occurred in the first quarter of the Browns' 33-30 overtime victory. The first came less than two minutes into the contest when Ngata punched Cleveland rookie left offensive tackle Joe Thomas following a Baltimore fumble recovery. Browns' wide receiver Braylon Edwards fumbled after a 6-yard catch, and the ball was recovered by Ravens' middle linebacker Ray Lewis, who was tackled by Thomas at the Baltimore 45-yard line. But Ngata felt Thomas intentionally went for Lewis' knees and slugged the rookie tackle. Ngata was penalized 15 yards for a personal foul and acknowledged after the game that he expected to be fined.

Ravens Express Concern Over FG Call

Oct 31, 2014 6:09 AM

The officials got the call right, deeming Browns' kicker Phil Dawson's game-tying, 51-yard field goal against Baltimore with no time left on Sunday to be good. It's how the officials went about making the decision that has the Ravens scratching their heads. On Monday, Ravens Coach Brian Billick indicated that the team will file a report with the NFL over Sunday's unusual circumstances. "We'll lodge the normal concerns we had not only with the way the end of the game was administered, but also a couple of calls leading up to that and let the appropriate people handle it," Billick told reporters, according to the team's Web Site. "For us, it's a matter of moving on. Very disappointed, surely as unique a circumstance as I've ever been a part of." "There's nothing I can add in terms of what they did, what did they see, what actually happened, what should have been done. I'll let the officials communicate that, as I'm sure they will, responding to our memos and in their TV shows. So, I'll try not to supersede that."

Knee Injury To Keep Browns' NT Smith Out

Oct 1, 2014 1:11 PM

Cleveland nose tackle Shaun Smith will not play in Sunday's game against the Baltimore Ravens because of a knee injury. Smith was injured during practice Thursday, the team said. The Browns' defensive front seven is already banged up as linebackers D'Qwell Jackson (ankle), Willie McGinest (hamstring) and Antwan Peek (knee) were limited in their workouts this week. Smith will likely be replaced in the starting lineup by Orpheus Roye. The Browns will activate rookie Louis Leonard, who was claimed off waivers from St. Louis on Oct. 8. Leonard would be backup nose tackle so Ethan Kelley can get time at end.

Browns Could Franchise Anderson?

Jun 1, 2014 12:38 AM

The popular opinion has been that the Browns will give restricted free agent quarterback Derek Anderson a qualifying offer with the highest tender -- $2.562 million, which would bring back first- and third-round draft choices to Cleveland if another team signed him -- there also is another viable and pricey scenario that has gone virtually ignored. Cleveland still could opt to slap its franchise tag on Anderson, meaning that any team that signed him would have to surrender two first-round picks to the Browns. The move would potentially be costly to Cleveland. It would increase the price it would pay for Anderson next season from $2.562 million to about $10.6 million. But there is no price a team can place on the value of a proven quarterback, a position Cleveland has struggled to fill since it re-entered the league.

Steelers Win AFC North Battle WIth Browns

Aug 31, 2014 6:44 PM

The Cleveland Browns did almost everything possible to beat the rival Steelers. They seized a 15-point lead, forced a key turnover and twice got long kickoff returns from Joshua Cribbs even as Pittsburgh tried to kick away from him. What the Browns couldn't defend was, of all things, Ben Roethlisberger's legs in Pittsburgh's 31-28 win Sunday. Roethlisberger scrambled 30 yards for a key touchdown during Pittsburgh's second-half comeback, then set up his own go-ahead 2-yard TD pass to Heath Miller with an important third-down run as the Steelers rallied. In a game that meant a two-game swing in the AFC North -- the Browns (5-4) would have tied the Steelers (7-2) by winning -- Roethlisberger's big second half overcame Cleveland quarterback Derek Anderson's huge first half.

Browns' Place G McKinney On IR

Nov 2, 2014 10:00 AM

The Cleveland Browns' offensive line, which has started the same five players in each of the first eight games, suffered a setback Saturday when right guard Seth McKinney was placed on injured reserve, ending his season. A six-year veteran, McKinney suffered a shoulder injury in last Sunday's overtime victory against the Seattle Seahawks. This marks the second straight season that McKinney, 28, will finish on the injured reserve list. He missed the entire 2006 season with the Miami Dolphins because of a disk injury to his neck. Despite that injury, the Browns signed McKinney as an unrestricted free agent this spring, and he has played well as the team revamped the offensive-line unit. A third-round choice of the Dolphins in 2002, McKinney, a former Texas A&M standout, has appeared in 69 games in his career, 42 of them as a starter.
