Could Cardinals Cut Leinart?

Sep 16, 2014 5:08 AM

Clark Judge of CBS Sports is reporting that Cardinals quarterback Matt Leinart is in danger of being cut. "People in and around the Cardinals' ballclub tell me that the former No. 1 pick might be cut, not because he hasn't completed a high percentage of passes -- because he has -- but because the players there have no faith in the guy and don't believe they can win with him," Judge writes. Leinart has said publicly that he's outplayed Derek Anderson this preseason in the race to become Arizona's starting quarterback.

Whisenhunt Won't Hint At Starter

Jul 20, 2014 9:45 PM

Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt probably has an idea of who will be the team's starting quarterback entering the season. However, he won't reveal who that might be. Matt Leinart was benched in favor of Derek Anderson for Arizona's third preseason game this weekend. "Whiz says he saw good things from both QBs. Won't hint at a starter or provide a timeline for naming one," Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic wrote on his Twitter page.

Leinart Not Taking Demotion Well

May 20, 2014 3:07 AM

Cardinals quarterback Matt Leinart is not taking his recent demotion well. Arizona is benching Leinart in favor of Derek Anderson for their preseason game against the Bears. "I'm disappointed," Leinart told Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic. "I've done everything to this point that they've asked me to and more. I've worked hard and been a leader. I'm trying to be that guy in this new role. I have high expectations for myself." Leinart was expected to be Arizona's starting quarterback after Kurt Warner retired.

The coach says it's a flip of how they played the quarterbacks in Monday night's 24-10 loss at Tennessee.

He called the injury "a minor setback" but wouldn't set any time for his return. "I don't set timetables," he said. "I'm just going to do everything they ask me to do, plus some, and hopefully that's going to get me back as fast as possible." Arizona coach Ken Whisenhunt fully expects Fitzgerald to be back for the season opener at St. Louis on Sept. 12.

Preseason Vital For Leinart

Oct 13, 2014 6:25 AM

Cardinals quarterback Matt Leinart definitely isn't taking the preseason lightly. With Kurt Warner retired, the former USC star is getting a second chance as Arizona's starter. "It's huge. I'm definitely not taking this preseason lightly," he said. "I don't think you ever do, but there's always that mindset that 'I'm only going to play a series.' I'm going in knowing I'm not going to play a whole lot, but I want to take advantage of those opportunities."
