The Texans have agreed to a contract with veteran receiver Bryant Johnson. After practice Monday, Johnson worked out for the team's pro personnel people and impressed them enough to get an offer.

The Cowboys have invested in the future of cornerback Orlando Scandrick. Scandrick received a five-year extension worth a total value of $26 million from the team this week. He has never been a full-time starter and will receive $10 million in guaranteed money. Scandrick was in line to become a free agent after this season.

The Dolphins have signed Larry Johnson as insurance at the running back position. Johnson knows he must quickly make a good impression, including off the field, where repeated missteps derailed his career. "It's kind of hard to convince anybody with my colorful background that, yeah, I've changed," said Johnson. "But you change with every situation you go through. You know that you can't get many more shots. You do the best you can with your opportunity and ride on out to the sunset."

The Steelers have signed linebacker Lawrence Timmons to a five-year, $50 million contract extension, according to a source. Earlier this offseason, Pittsburgh signed fellow linebacker LaMarr Woodley to a six-year, $61.5 million deal. Timmons, a five-year veteran, had three sacks and two interceptions last season.

The Giants are close to signing veteran defensive tackle Jimmy Kennedy, according to a source. Kennedy, a Yonkers native, was the No. 12 overall pick by the Rams in the 2003 NFL Draft. The Penn State product has played on five teams, most recently the Vikings from 2008-2010. Minnesota released Kennedy last month.

The Eagles have re-signed veteran offensive lineman Reggie Wells. Wells played in eight games for Philadelphia last year, starting one at left guard -- the regular-season finale against the Cowboys.

Josh McCown signed a one-year deal for the league minimum of $810,000 on Wednesday to be a backup for the 49ers, giving his career new life and adding a veteran to the quarterback competition. He is expected to compete with rookie Colin Kaepernick for the No. 2 spot behind presumed starter Alex Smith, according to an Associated Press report.

The Falcons have signed tight end Reggie Kelly. Atlanta originally drafted Kelly in the second round of the 1999 NFL Draft. The Falcons are thin at tight end after Justin Peelle suffered a knee injury against Miami. The extent of Peelle’s injujry has not be fully disclosed. Kelly last played for the Falcons in 2002.

The Dolphins have signed veteran linebacker Marvin Mitchell after spending four seasons with the Saints. Mitchell, a former seventh-round draft pick from Tennessee, played mostly on special teams for the Saints.

The Chiefs signed former Ravens offensive tackle Jared Gaither on Thursday. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Gaither is the third former Ravens starter to sign with Kansas City this offseason, according to an ESPN.com report
