NFL Interested In Saturday Games If College Football Season Canceled

Apr 30, 2020 3:28 PM

The NFL have discussed the possibility of moving some games to Saturdays this season if college football postpones its entire season.

The NFL has even had preliminary discussions with its broadcast partners about the idea.

The NFL plays stand-alone games on Thursdays and Mondays already. The NFL already schedules Saturday games after the college regular season concludes in December.

College football has more uncontrollable variables and crowd attendance is more important for its revenue than the NFL.

Roger Goodell Requested Salary Reduced To $0

Apr 29, 2020 3:00 PM

Roger Goodell voluntarily requested to the NFL's compensation committee that his salary be reduced to zero and went into effect weeks ago.

In a memo written by Goodell and attached in Rooney's email, which was sent to all team owners Wednesday afternoon, the league also announced that it will implement executive pay cuts and will furlough a limited part of its workforce.

"I wanted to make you aware that yesterday afternoon the Compensation Committee reviewed and approved these measures," Rooney wrote. "It is important to note that the Commissioner and his staff took the initiative to implement these measures as responsible steps in light of the economic uncertainty facing all businesses. Obviously, these are steps we all would prefer not to have to take, and the League office remains committed to planning for a full season in 2020.

"... In addition to the steps outlined in the memo, last month the Commissioner requested that he voluntarily reduce his salary to $0, which went into effect earlier this month."

NFLPA Hints Testing Will Be Key To Resuming Football

Apr 23, 2020 1:11 PM

DeMaurice Smith is preparing players for the uncertainty and changes that the coronavirus pandemic has placed around the game of football.

Though there haven't been any firm decisions yet, the executive director of the NFL Players Association hinted toward the need for mass testing as an important step for returning to football.

"The benchmarks that it seems that are somewhat consistent is the need for mass testing. I haven't heard anyone who hasn't emphasized mass testing in the community for measuring how and to what extent things can return to somewhat normalcy," Smith said.

"I don't have the answers right now. Knowing the availability of widespread testing is something we would definitely want to know -- the availability of kits. I certainly wouldn't want to be in a situation where we are making a choice to taking test resources away from some group of people to provide them to another group of people. That raises ethical issues. We'd also want to know the information that's coming from that test ... what's coming from that test?"

One week after the NBA and NBPA agreed to a plan to withhold 25% of each player's paycheck beginning May 15, Smith acknowledged that the NFL-NFLPA collective bargaining agreement doesn't have a force majeure provision like the NBA that can be enacted to allow teams to cut a player's salary because of the cancellation of games.

"Our salaries are tied to revenue. The CBA is clear on how that's calculated. It's also clear about the obligations to the parties in the event of cancellations of games," Smith said. "[There's] an obligation for the parties to get together and negotiate in good faith as far as projecting the salary cap. We have provisions in place where we know process-wise what happens. The only thing we don't have to plug into the formula is exactly knowing what's going to happen. We certainly will be engaging in those projections as we go forward."

NFL Will Fundraise For COVID-19 Relief As Part Of Draft

Apr 8, 2020 6:08 PM

The 2020 NFL Draft will serve as a three-day virtual fundraiser for six charities selected by the NFL Foundation battling the spread of COVID-19.

The American Red Cross, CDC Foundation's All of Us, Feeding America's COVID-19 Response Fund, Meals on Wheels COVID-19 Response Fund, the Salvation Army and the United Way's COVID-19 Community Response and Recovery Fund will receive money raised by the NFL during the draft.

"As we face this global health crisis together, we are filled with gratitude for the extraordinary work of first responders, healthcare workers and many others who are helping those in need," said NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. "The Draft-A-Thon will deliver much-needed funding to many who are suffering as well as those on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic. Conducting this event virtually, and taking all necessary precautions while doing so, underscores the importance of staying home and staying strong during this unprecedented moment in our history."
