NFL To Tarp First 6-8 Rows To Protect Players From COVID-19, Sell Ads

Jun 24, 2020 5:23 PM

The NFL is preparing to sell camera-visible signage to local sponsors during the 2020 season to help offset COVID-19 revenue losses.

The first six to eight rows of seating in every stadium, including on-field suites, will be off limits to fans this season to protect players and staff from COVID-19.

Those seats will be covered by tarps to feature ads.

Unlike in MLB or NHL, the value of that on-camera signage in the NFL is high due to its extreme scarcity.

Dr Anthony Fauci Believes NFL May Need Bubble To Play 2020 Season

Jun 18, 2020 9:53 AM

Dr Anthony Fauci believes the NFL may need to create a bubble campus similar to the NBA in order to make their 2020 season.

“Unless players are essentially in a bubble – insulated from the community and they are tested nearly every day – it would be very hard to see how football is able to be played this fall,” Fauci told Dr. Sanjay Gupta of CNN. “If there is a second wave, which is certainly a possibility and which would be complicated by the predictable flu season, football may not happen this year.”

The NFL has still operated, at least publicly, as though they expect to have fans in the stands for the 2020 season.

Rosas was driving a black Chevrolet SUV on Tuesday morning when a T-bone collision occurred. Witnesses saw Rosas driving erratically over the double yellow lines and at a speed estimated to be 100 mph when he ran a red light and hit a Ford pickup truck.

Alcohol impairment is believed to be a factor in the crash.

Fox In 'Very, Very Early Discussions' With NFL On New Rights Deal

Jun 16, 2020 3:06 PM

Fox is in "very, very early discussions" about renewing its television rights deal with the NFL.

The current rights owned by Fox expire after the 2022 season. Fox renewed its existing deal in 2011 at $1.1 billion annually.

“Give me the NFL, the ability to have that kind of programming,” Fox Corp. COOO John Nallen said. “That’s where the focus should be.”

Average annual value, he continued, “is a press headline that makes it great on the sports pages. But it really has no relevance to the business. If I took the AAV of my affiliate revenues, you’d say, ‘Wow, that’s fantastic.’ But you always measure me on how I did last quarter, never mind last year, compared to this quarter.”

NFL, NFLPA To Discuss COVID-19 Adjustments To CBA

Jun 2, 2020 3:42 PM

The NFL and NFLPA have both acknowledged that important CBA negotiations are on the horizon as they handle financial adjustments due to COVID-19.

The league and NFLPA are studying how the revenue could be affected and what the sure-fire losses will look like.

The salary cap (currently $198.2 million for 2020) is calculated based on expected revenue, but there's also a mechanism where it rises or falls based on unexpectedly higher or lower revenue in the previous season.

The worst-case scenario is that every game is played in a completely empty stadium, leading to what sources have estimated as a $4 or $5 billion drop -- about a third of revenue.

The two sides agreed to a new CBA shortly before the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
