NFL TV Viewership Up 6 Percent From 2013, 10 Percent From 2012

Oct 19, 2014 7:22 AM

NFL games are averaging 18.1 million viewers through Week 6, which is up six percent from 2013 and up 10 percent from 2012.

There had been concerns that the NFL's issues with regards to domestic violence would trigger a decrease in viewership, but that hasn't yet proven to be the case.

NFL Concussion Settlement Losing Potential Opt Outs

Oct 18, 2014 3:34 PM

The NFL's concussion settlement with most retired players appears close to being accepted.

Opposition to the settlement has dwindled, with no more than a few hundred of the 18,000 former players eligible for the settlement and as little as a few dozen choosing to "opt out".

The dwindling opposition increases the likelihood that the settlement will be approved after a "fairness hearing" before U.S. District Judge Anita Brody next month in Philadelphia.

Players are given three choices: accept the settlement; opt out, which allows them to continue suing the league; or object, which means they want the judge to reject the deal. A large number of opt outs would put additional pressure on Brody, but as of last week, just nine players had filed papers to do so, the lead negotiator for the plaintiffs, Chris Seeger, told the court in a conference call.

After the NFL agreed in June to lift a $765 million cap, the opponents said too few players would qualify under the terms.

"It's just a terrible situation," said Jason Luckasevic, a Pittsburgh attorney who began working on the issue in 2007 and filed the first concussion case against the NFL four years later. "This deal is not anywhere near what it should have been."

Super Bowl Hosts Will Need To Give Up Home Game For London

Nov 6, 2014 6:50 AM

NFL owners have voted to require any team that hosts a Super Bowl to give up a home game to London at some point over a five-year period, according to Daniel Kaplan of SportsBusiness Journal.

The NFL has said they want to place a team permanently in London.

The NFL may eventually to draft teams to host games in London, crafting a Hard Knocks-style formula for determining who’ll be tapped on the shoulder if there aren’t enough volunteers.

Snyder Watches Game With Disgraced Outgoing Navajo President

Nov 17, 2014 5:20 PM

Dan Snyder watched Washington's game at the Arizona Cardinals with Ben Shelly, president of teh Navajo Nation tribal authority.

Snyder has had an ongoing campaign attempting to convince the public that his team's nickname isn't racist.

Shelly is technically still president, but finished seventh in August's primary election.

Shelly entered office under a dark cloud, being charged with fraud, conspiracy and theft in connection with allegations that he had dipped into slush funds to benefit himself and family members.

The Navajo tribal council voted 9-2 in April to formally oppose Washington's nickname.

Report: NFL Plans To Send 1-2 Teams To L.A. Within Two Years

Oct 27, 2014 2:00 PM

The current plan is that the NFL will send one or two teams back to Los Angeles within the next 12 to 24 months, according to a league source.

The timeline would include a team announcing its intention to move in the 2015 or 2016 offseason, with arrangements to play at the Rose Bowl or the L.A. Coliseum pending the construction of a new stadium.  Possible sites for a venue in L.A. include the AEG project at L.A. Live in downtown, the land purchased recently by Rams owner Stan Kroenke at Hollywood Park, Chavez Ravine, and a couple of locations that have not yet been publicly disclosed.

Ed Roski’s shovel-ready site at City of Industry is not regarded as a viable destination.

The St. Louis Rams, Oakland Raiders and San Diego Chargers are considered the three teams that could relocate. All three also previously played in Los Angeles.
