Aaron Hernandez has been arrested and charged in the murder of Odin Lloyd.

The New England Patriots subsequently released Hernandez.

The Patriots extended their sympathies to Lloyd's family in the statement announcing Hernandez's release from the team.

"A young man was murdered last week and we extend our sympathies to the family and friends who mourn his loss," the Patriots' statement said. "Words cannot express the disappointment we feel knowing that one of our players was arrested as a result of this investigation. We realize that law enforcement investigations into this matter are ongoing. We support their efforts and respect the process. At this time, we believe this transaction is simply the right thing to do."

Hernandez signed a five-year, $40 million extension with the Patriots last August.

The Detroit Lions have signed Chris Hope and waived Brian Robiskie.

Hope is a 32-year-old safety that was with the Atlanta Falcons last season. Hope was a Pro Bowl selection in 2008 while with Jim Schwartz and the Tennessee Titans.

Robiskie caught four passes for 44 yards last season.

The Dallas Cowboys have released Anthony Hargrove.

Hargrove signed with the Cowboys one month ago.

Hargrove was suspended for the 2012 season for his role in the New Orleans Saints' bounty program.

“He just didn't have the old burst back," said a source with the Cowboys. “He's almost 30. It's not easy to start all over again.''

The Jacksonville Jaguars have been awarded a waiver claim on Mike Kafka.

Kafka was released by the New England Patriots on Monday to clear roster spot for Tim Tebow.

Kafka was a fourth round pick by the Philadelphia Eagles in 2010.

Kafka becomes the fifth quarterback on the Jaguars roster.

The Dallas Cowboys also claimed Kafka.

Vonta Leach has been released by the Baltimore Ravens.

The Ravens attempted to trade Leach, but were unable to reach a deal with any team.

Leach is interested in signing with the Houston Texans, who he played for from 2007 until 2010.

Leach was due to make $3 million this season.

Tarvaris Jackson has been released by the Buffalo Bills.

Jackson was acquired by the Bills last September in a trade with the Seattle Seahawks, but never played in the regular season.

Jackson re-signed in the offseason, but the Bills surprisingly parted ways long before the start of training camp.

The Bills have Kevin Kolb, EJ Manuel and Jeff Tuel on their roster at quarterback.
