Commanders' Trade Deadline Plan Hinges On Eagles Game

Oct 28, 2023 5:44 PM

The Washington Commanders' decision on whether to proceed with trading players or pushing for the playoffs is expected to be influenced by Sunday's game against the Philadelphia Eagles, sources told ESPN.

A win against the NFC East-leading Eagles would supercharge the Commanders' season and leave them 4-4, with a chance to fight for a playoff spot.

Jalen Hurts Wears Leg Brace In Second Half Against Dolphins

Oct 23, 2023 8:51 AM

Jalen Hurts played the second half of the Philadelphia Eagles' win over the Miami Dolphins on Sunday night with a brace on his left leg.

Hurts did not go into much detail postgame, but a source said it's believed to be a knee injury.

"I'll be fine," Hurts said, though when asked if it's something that will affect him moving forward, he responded, "I hope not."

The Eagles quarterback rushed 11 times (including three kneel downs) for 21 yards and a touchdown while throwing for 279 yards with two touchdowns and an interception.

Hurts was late coming out of the tunnel for the second half, and backup Marcus Mariota warmed up on the sideline in his absence.

Competition Committee Continues To Look At QB Push Play

Oct 18, 2023 7:58 AM

The NFL continues to look into the quarterback push play, used most often by the Philadelphia Eagles.

The play drew some pushback after last season when the Eagles converted on 37 of the 41 times they ran it. The Competition Committee reviewed it and discussed it during the offseason but didn't make a rule proposal to ban it.

"There'll be more data. Whether there's injuries or not, there will be success rates; there will be teams that will have an opinion," Rich McKay said. "Last year, we did talk about it a lot. There were enough teams to say it's one year; let's see it, and leave it alone. So we did, and I'm sure it'll be back again. But I just don't want to get in the business of predicting because I really don't know what the outcome will be. I do know it will be talked about."

The play became legal in the NFL in 2005 when the league removed language in the rule book prohibiting pushing offensive players.

Jets Vow To Give Jalen Hurts '11 Kisses' On Tush Push Play

Oct 12, 2023 9:32 AM

The New York Jets vow to be ready for the "tush push" when they face the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday afternoon.

"If the quarterback carries the ball," Robert Saleh said, "we've got to give him 11 kisses."

The Eagles were successful on four of six pushes in last week's 23-14 victory over the Los Angeles Rams. For the season, they've converted 13 of 16 into first downs or touchdowns -- an 81.3% success rate.

"It's a unique style, just the way they get down there, in that rugby stance, and get low," linebacker C.J. Mosley said. "It's just really hard for defenses to get under and get that push. That's really the main thing. Besides that, they've got three guys behind and pushing him, so it starts the defense off at a disadvantage."
