Adam Gase, commenting publicly for the first time on Jamal Adams' contract dispute and trade request, made it seem as though a trade is out of the question.

Asked if he "absolutely, positively" wants Adams on the 2020 roster, Gase said, "Yes, I want Jamal on our team."

What Gase declined to address is whether the Jets are open to extending Adams' contract before the start of the season -- the heart of the dispute.

Adams, signed through 2021, is on record as saying he wants a new deal before the regular season.

"This is a tough part of the business, when one of your best players is working through things with our organization," Gase said. "We have to figure out a way to get to a good place, which will get him back, in the right spot and ready to go."

Gregg Williams didn't want to comment on the specifics of Jamal Adams' contract dispute with the New York Jets, but the defensive coordinator issued support to the safety and sounded cautiously optimistic about his return.

"You never, ever mess with a guy's contract, but I've got his back on those types of things," Williams said. "He has to get all that stuff settled, so now, boom! Get back into our setting and now we're ready to roll. He knows that."

Adams formally requested a trade from the Jets last week.

Since then, he has expressed on social media that his days with the Jets are over.

In a cellphone video posted to social media in the Dallas area, a fan spotted Adams in his Mercedes SUV and asked, "You coming to Dallas?"

The safety replied, "I'm trying, bro."

The Cowboys are among the seven teams Adams would welcome a trade to, according to a report. He grew up in the Dallas area and attended Hebron High School in Carrollton, Texas, 31 miles from AT&T Stadium.

The safety would welcome a trade to one of seven teams: the Baltimore Ravens, Dallas Cowboys, Houston Texans, Kansas City Chiefs, Philadelphia Eagles, San Francisco 49ers and Seattle Seahawks.

The Jets have no intention of trading Adams, according to sources.

The New York Jets have $25.2 million in salary cap space after creating $11 million in cap relief from Trumaine Johnson. But they still don't have interest in signing Jadeveon Clowney.

Johnson was eating up $15 million, but his cap charge dropped Tuesday to $4 million.

Clowney continues to seek a contract beyond what any team is prepared to pay him. 

With the calendar turning to June on Monday, teams that cut players with post-June 1 designations earlier this offseason now have some more cap space.

The New York Jets, Atlanta Falcons, Los Angeles Rams and Chicago Bears are at the top of the list of those that now have more space.

The Jets now have $11 million more in cap space. They released Trumaine Johnson earlier in the offseason.

The Falcons will see $10.75 million in new cap space as a result of cutting Desmond Trufant.

The Rams and Bears now have an additional $5.5 million and $2.8 million in new space, respectively.
